and the ground of the Tathagata. Of these, the first two are inverted, and the Tathagata is not inverted. As it is said: 'Immaculate exhaustion and unborn, Wisdom Bodhi is said, Exhaustion and non-birth, therefore, Those should be known in order.' It is like this saying. 'The four are also the five.' This refers to the four assemblies of noble beings in general: Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Perfectly Enlightened Buddhas. Among them, the Shravaka, as mentioned earlier, is the one who solely practices peace and is completely dedicated to great Bodhi, thus becoming five types. If so, isn't the manifested Shravaka what was mentioned earlier? Answer: It has been previously explained that it is a Bodhisattva. Here, the distinction of individuals is directly shown, and the ground where they reside and the distinction of vehicles are also shown. The ground and the vehicle are also established on the distinction of the wisdom of realization, so they should not be considered different. The explanation of the fourth chapter of the commentary on the Holy Lankavatara Sutra, 'The Ornament of the Tathagatagarbha,' is complete. Then, with words such as 'again,' the previously mentioned result to be obtained—Buddha-nature—is summarized and shown in another way. First, the question is raised. The words 'Bhagavan' and so on explain the answer in detail, the meaning of which is that the Tathagata should not be a permanent entity. If so, then the Ishvara imagined by others as permanent, omniscient, and the creator, the cause of all beings, etc., would be no different. If here, what is similar to this is that it is associated with successive fruits and enters successive objects of knowledge, so it should not be a permanent and unique nature. 'Successive fruits are associated, Permanent dharmas are not unique.' It is like this saying. Answer: No, because this also applies to the assertion that the Tathagata is omniscient and benefits all beings. 'Unmade is permanent,' because in this nature, there is no difference from others. The Tathagata is also not permanent.

That is not the meaning. Or, if others think that the Tathagata's complete nirvana in the grove of twin Sala trees in Kushinagar is of an impermanent nature, that is not correct. If that were the case, the impermanence of conditioned phenomena would be destroyed at the end of time, and would initially become momentary things. Therefore, the Tathagata's uncontaminated aggregates are known as the four characteristics with signs, and because they are destroyed and disappear, they would become annihilation. If someone thinks that way, it is unreasonable. If that were the case, accumulating merit for many eons for that purpose would become meaningless. Furthermore, they do not attain nirvana in that way by destroying the Lord of Death and other demons. As it is said in the scriptures, "Not nirvana, not in nirvana." and so on, as mentioned before. If someone thinks that here, conditioned things do not necessarily become impermanent, like vajras and mountains, then the answer should be given with "Great Wisdom" and so on. Furthermore, because the Tathagata becomes impermanent and ceases due to compassion, accumulating the collections of merit and wisdom for that purpose would also become meaningless. Or, the meaning here is that if the Tathagata were self-existent, then, as mentioned before, it would be unreasonable to become non-existent. If it were to become non-existent in that way, then it would not be self-existent, so his wisdom, the collection of the Dharma body, would become meaningless, because the true meaning would not be accomplished. Furthermore, compared to other conditioned phenomena such as the Universal Monarch, because there is no special reason to consider only some as Tathagatas, everything would become Tathagatas without distinction. If it is said that it is not correct that there is no special reason, because the Tathagata arises from the completion of the two accumulations and has the ultimate qualities of abandonment and attainment, so he is not the same as others, that is not correct, because as mentioned before, he will ultimately become subject to death, so he has not attained a vajra-like body, therefore he has not destroyed the aggregates and the Lord of Death and other demons, and he has not attained mastery over life and so on, so he does not have the qualities of abandonment and attainment.
