If one passes away without abandoning other afflictions, having entered into abandoning the fifth affliction, and having abandoned up to the eighth, those are noble once-returners. Because there are remaining afflictions to be abandoned, they pass away from there and take one birth among the gods and humans of the desire realm. Even so, they only take birth once in any one place, therefore they are called once-returners. Thus, at the last of two births, they manifest the antidote and enter into nirvana. Furthermore, if they do not pass away without abandoning the remaining afflictions to be abandoned, from then on, from entering the path of abandoning the ninth up to abandoning the eighth affliction of the peak of existence, they are called non-returners. Because they have abandoned the bonds of the desire realm, they do not take birth there. There are also those who manifest the antidote on that basis and enter into nirvana. Furthermore, if they become disgusted with the remaining ninth affliction of the peak of existence to be abandoned, they pass away and cultivate the antidote from there, thereby also abandoning it, then they are called Arhats. Furthermore, if, as it is said in the sutra: "In the nine grounds, the great of the great, the great and other stains, are purified by the small of the small antidote, and the remaining paths." In accordance with this, the afflictions to be abandoned are abandoned all at once by the cultivation of the three realms, that is, by cultivating the four truths belonging to the three realms, thereby causing the afflictions of the three realms that are contrary to the nature of reality, not to be separated and gradually abandoned as before, but to be combined into one, and also divided into three types: great, medium, and small. And each of these is further divided into three, such as the great of the great, the medium of the great, and so on, thereby becoming nine. Then, from the initial small of the great, or between the great of the medium, the four types are abandoned as appropriate between seven births, and they enter into nirvana as before, or they abandon these between three and five times, and manifest the antidote at the last moment of life and enter into nirvana, or they manifest the antidote in the initial single life and enter into nirvana. Furthermore, in that life or at the last moment of those lives, the antidote is not perfected, and with the afflictions to be abandoned, the medium of the medium.

Having been reborn from etc., that person dies, abandoning the intermediate (afflictions of the desire realm) between small and medium, is called a once-returner, as mentioned before. Furthermore, if that person does not abandon the remaining portion to be abandoned, and after death, enters the path of abandoning the ninth category in that basis of rebirth, and has abandoned it, then because he simultaneously abandons the afflictions of the three realms, he is a non-returner in all three realms. Although this person is also an Arhat, he is temporarily called a non-returner as long as the remaining portion of the aggregates exists, and when that remaining portion is abandoned, he is called an Arhat. Among these, the afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation are sixteen types. The reason for this is that the path of cultivation focuses on the suchness of the nature of those truths that have not been distinguished, so what should be abandoned is not wrong conduct in the truth of phenomena, but rather wrong conduct in the nature of phenomena. Therefore, it is not appropriate to establish distinctions based on truth as before. Furthermore, wrong view, holding views as supreme, holding moral discipline and asceticism as supreme, and doubt are the four that are to be abandoned by seeing, because they are only afflictions that arise from conceptual imputation. Apart from these, in the desire realm there are six afflictions such as desire, and in the two upper realms, except for anger, they transform into five each, so in this way, the total becomes sixteen. What is said by "Great Wisdom" etc. is the main part of what should be abandoned. Total bondage refers to total bondage with existence and the individual, or it can also be said to be total bondage with suffering. Great, medium, and small refer to the individuals shown before. The inferior person has dull faculties, and at the time when he has not attained the result, those afflictions are heavier. The medium person has medium faculties and afflictions. The superior person has sharp faculties and light afflictions. Pride refers to being arrogant because of dwelling in those (afflictions) that one considers superior. The meaning of "higher and higher by difference" etc. is higher and higher by the difference of abandoning the afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation as before.
