is unreasonable. The stated cause of production is also the cause of a cause, so it is merely labeled as a cause, but it is not the actual cause. Furthermore, for those things that are interrupted by other times, it is unreasonable to say that "because this exists, this arises," and "because this is produced, this also arises" in the sense of dependent origination. This is because "this" refers to something that is near and obvious. Therefore, for such things, it can only be said that "after that ceases, this arises." Furthermore, the karma of being born in the first dhyana without falling from the first dhyana is the same as the place of dhyana, because the karma has not been exhausted. Just as in the desire realm, the merit karma of being born as a human being is not exhausted, and after life is exhausted, one transmigrates from there and is born as a human being, the karma is the same as the previous karma. Furthermore, there is no harm in relying on that through dhyana to roughly cultivate the lower realm, and to cultivate tranquility in that, because it is possible to fall from there and be born in the lower realm, so it is necessary to transform in that way, and therefore one cultivates in that way. Also, when being born in the first dhyana from the second dhyana, it should be understood that it is also unreasonable to say that the old karma of the past is what constitutes that body. If it is said that even if the karma has ceased, the habitual tendencies that are imbued by it, passing from one to another, exist in the alaya-consciousness and have not ceased, and that immediately from there such a body is constituted, then, in that case, the ignorance that completely arouses that is also unreasonable in the previous state, and only the meaning is understood. Those are what children distinguish from non-differentiation, meaning that those outer and inner dharmas are one in mind in conventional truth, and empty in ultimate truth.

It is the function of focusing in order to make manifest, that is, the causes and conditions by which consciousness appears as the aspect of an object. Here, the meaning of the condition of focusing and the condition of ownership has been explained before. The cause of characteristic is related to the characteristic that immediately after the establishment of the characteristic, it makes the term to be expressed established. That is, from the characteristic being set as a sign, the terms to be expressed are established, such as saying that because it is hot and burns, this can be called fire. The cause of the agent is doing the work that belongs to power, like a wheel-turning king, which means that a sentient being does as he pleases with the object he has obtained freedom over, just as a wheel-turning king exercises power over the country. The cause of manifestation is that the nature of the object to be distinguished or examined, which has already arisen, performs the function of manifestation, such as the light of reason and the expression of body and speech, and the light of lamps, etc., makes the meaning clear. The previously explained appearance and focus are the nature of intelligence, but here appearance or clarity is clung to as the dharma of the object. The dependent cause is that which produces dissimilar differences and is encompassed by non-coexisting contradictions, such as when an antidote abandons the dharma to be abandoned on the path, and when those antidotes revert, in order to generate the non-conceptual wisdom of the antidote, the activity of the stream of consciousness is not interrupted. Furthermore, in general, the activity of the continuum of conditioned phenomena is uninterrupted, even if some similar things cease, in their realm, different things of different kinds are produced one after another by themselves, and the continuum is uninterrupted. Here, the teacher Yeshe Pal (Sanskrit: Jñānaśrī) says, "The cause of arising is the previous karma that gives rise to external and internal dharmas." These and so on show that they are all like illusions of other powers, but to establish them as real things is only the imputation of children. Here, it has also been explained before that the characteristic of cause and effect is not appropriate for things that exist at the same time. Similarly, it has also been shown that sequential occurrence is not appropriate.

The meaning of applying the term "cause" to the side of what has arisen is established in relation to the effect. Since there is no relation when the effect has not arisen, the meaning of the term "cause" is not reasonable. Therefore, from what does the effect itself arise? Just as the meaning of the term "father" is not reasonable when a son has not been born, and if the father does not exist, the son himself cannot arise. Therefore, this principle of cause and effect is speculated by those who conceptualize; it is not established as the ultimate truth. If someone asks, "Didn't the Abhidharma Sutra say that the four conditions produce consciousness?" The answer is that it was spoken with the dependent nature of illusion in mind, for the purpose of dispelling the fear of those with attachment, but it is not the ultimate truth. The meaning spoken therein is that the causal condition is the seed of the same kind as consciousness, which causes the self-nature of the effect to arise. The objective condition is that which possesses both the branch of self-appearance and the branch of causing to arise, and it establishes the aspect of consciousness. Here, there is no contradiction even if the characteristic is connected to the characteristic that can be expressed by saying, "The characteristic is established as the aspect of consciousness," because it is explained that way in the treatises of reasoning. The immediately preceding condition is that one's own nature exists in consciousness, both cause and effect are included in one continuum without interruption, and when the former ceases, the latter arises, and then its function also manifests, and it produces the nature of realization. In the treatises of reasoning, it is also said that the consciousness of the immediately preceding condition produces eye consciousness as the nature of realization, and so on. The dominant condition is different from the previous three conditions, and it causes consciousness to be able to grasp objects. The statement that gradual arising does not occur means that the actual arising, as speculated by ordinary people and explained in the scriptures, is not reasonable in the ultimate sense. The term "great wisdom" and so on refers to the fact that even the cause-and-effect phenomena that belong to the nature of wisdom are truly established, but it is only attachment to the appearance of what is conceptualized. Therefore, it does not arise in the ultimate sense, and there is no external world apart from the appearance of the mind.
