Because (the mind) is filled with the arrogance of "I think it is," and the net of views grows rapidly, causing the sprouts of name and form to arise, etc., that is why it is said. Moreover, even in the state of name and form, ignorance and so on also arise in succession. This treatise clearly shows that the consciousness aggregate is covered by the aspect of cause. As it is said, the seed of consciousness, together with the proximate cause, is the cause of the manifestation and accomplishment of birth, old age, and death in the next life. As previously shown, ignorance and action are the dependence of the past extreme, while consciousness and so on are considered the dependence of the present extreme, therefore the consciousness aggregate is considered to be covered by the result. In any case, there is no contradiction. In the "Noble Nirvana Sutra," it is also said: 'Son of good family, these twelve links of dependent origination are equally present in all sentient beings, both external and internal. What are the twelve links? The past afflictions are ignorance, the past actions are action, and the initial entry into the womb in the present is consciousness,' and so on. Furthermore, son of good family, all sentient beings have these twelve links of dependent origination, but they are not complete, because death in the embryonic stage makes the six sense bases and so on unreasonable. In the sentient beings of the form realm, there are no three feelings, three contacts, and craving, nor are there old age and death, but they are said to have twelve branches. The sentient beings of the formless realm do not have anything from the formless realm to old age and death, but they are said to have twelve branches, because that is what will definitely be obtained. Therefore, it should be said that all sentient beings equally have the twelve links of dependent origination.' Here, in the four dhyanas of the form realm, which are covered by their respective ordinary beings, except for equanimity, the other four are not present. However, because equanimity itself has the qualities of clarity, antidote, etc., the "Sutra of the Collection of the True Dharma" says that the three feelings other than equanimity and pleasure, and the aggregate contact of the tongue, etc., due to the absence of coarse food.

The aggregate of eye contact, and whatever arises from it, the aggregate of mind contact that is manifestly attached to the objects of these. These three contacts, as well as craving for desire, and aging encompassed by the lower realms, and death related to it, like these are said to be non-existent. These are also meant to be absent or only a small part in the state of meditative equipoise, but not completely absent. As previously stated, they are also afflicted by suffering such as being uncontrollable by the qualities of the Tathagata, as stated in other sutras. Moreover, beings in the formless realms are also afflicted by the suffering of not being able to control the samadhi of all grounds, and by the suffering of not obtaining the sacred Dharma, and so on. Therefore, why is it said that there is no desire to obtain such qualities, and craving for attachment to the taste of samadhi, etc.? Furthermore, the meaning of this sutra is that nothing exists apart from substantially established form and mind, and if only considering the aspect of appearing as form, then even in the formless realms there is a slight appearance of extremely subtle form. Because it is subtle, it is merely shown as non-existent. Therefore, all beings born there generally possess name and form, etc., and aging and death, which are the complete maturation of the aggregates, also exist, because it is said that they are afflicted by the suffering of death and rebirth. Also, the previous statement that there is no aging and death refers to the noble state of the fourth dhyana, where there is no completely terminated death and rebirth, etc. Here, it is not the case that the establishment of the completion of the three times is made from the perspective of karma experienced in other lifetimes or experienced in this life, but rather it is shown from the perspective of karma experienced after birth, etc., so there is no fault. Thus, after showing the extensive explanation of dependence on the past extreme, etc., in short, the meaning of "only this aggregate of suffering arises" is shown, and these are all summarized and shown by the three sufferings, namely, from ignorance to the six sense sources.
