That is, if form is analyzed to the level of atoms, then even atoms have no parts. As for what appears, even if external objects do not exist, consciousness appears as two. So it is said. The statement "there is no imperishable dharma" means that there is no permanent dharma that does not perish. That which is unborn is like the child of a barren woman, the horns of a rabbit, and so on, which are non-existent things. The All-Knowing One said in this commentary on the Holy Dharma: "No one can cause something to arise without a cause." Thus, he proclaimed the absence of self in phenomena. What is it that the Great Wisdom knows about the absence of self in phenomena? It is like this: understanding the nature of the imputed characteristics of the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, and so on. Imputation, in this context, refers to how, starting from external atoms, things with parts, qualities, actions, generalities, and particulars, and so on, are in fact non-existent. As the All-Knowing One said: "Just as children discriminate about things, so too, it is non-existent." If one differentiates by the difference of directional parts, then even the atoms themselves do not exist, so how much less do the large objects with parts that are produced from them? Dyed and undyed, moving and unmoving, obscured and unobscured, and so on, if differentiated, should not be one, like houses, villages, forests, and so on, so how could qualities and actions and so on abide in them? The statement that the aggregates are also separate from their own and common characteristics means that the aggregates are always conceived as arising from the four great elements. The common characteristic is the knowable nature of all elements. The particular characteristic is the nature of hardness, wetness, warmth, and movement. The self and common characteristics of these also appear separately in dreams and illusions, and so on. Therefore, the aggregates are separate from their own and common characteristics. Because they are separate from the imputed characteristics of permanence, self, and what belongs to self, form is without self, and the perception of a self with form, form belonging to self, form in self, and so on, and the aggregates of feeling and so on, are also the mountain of the view of the perishable collection, which is elevated to twenty peaks.

Having destroyed with the wisdom vajra, one will come to understand the selflessness of persons. The noble Bodhisattva knows that the aggregates, which are devoid of agent, act, and karma, and are immovable, as well as ignorance, craving, the cause of karma, and close relationships, are the nature of appearance. The Bodhisattva-Mahasattva of great intelligence, who meditates on all dharmas, mind, intellect, consciousness, and the five dharmas as being separate from their own nature, is skilled in the selflessness of dharmas. Such and so forth should be explained accordingly. As it is said here: Mind is the alaya-vijnana, the mind of ego is the intellect itself, that which grasps the objects is called vijnana. The alaya-vijnana itself appears as the nature of the six vijnanas, such as the eye, during the dream state. Immediately after the six have ceased, that vijnana is called intellect. Also, when the afflicted intellect arises with pride, at that time the alaya-vijnana, which appears as aggregates, elements, and sources, thinks, "I alone exist." The five dharmas are also the alaya-vijnana itself. The distinctions of names and signs, etc., and the differences between the other-powered and the perfectly established dharmas, arise from the power of self and others in beginningless samsara, and are defiled and undefiled. When the gross and subtle knowable are examined and are not perceived, then it appears that there is no thought, and one abides in the correct realization of the non-dual ultimate truth. Thus, having fully understood the selflessness of dharmas and persons through the knowledge of things and non-things, and having obtained the signless samadhi, one obtains the first Bodhisattva ground. Having obtained the supreme distinction of signlessness, in order to understand the supreme distinction of the nature of the ground, after the Joyful Ground, one gradually becomes skilled in the nine grounds and obtains the Cloud of Dharma Ground. Such and so forth, that is, by examining with wisdom, fully knowing the selflessness of dharmas and persons, one attains the first ground of supreme realization of signlessness.
