Now, the consciousnesses are the immediately preceding cause to each other. Thus, the next world is established, so samsara is without beginning. To that, Mahamati, the cessation of all sense consciousnesses is like this: stopping the various habits of unreal pervasive imagination of the alaya-consciousness. Mahamati, this is called the cessation of characteristics. All sense consciousnesses, that is, the five that appear as their own characteristics, arise in an inconceivable manner, and after that is the mind consciousness, that is, the alaya-consciousness also ceases due to causes such as unreal pervasive imagination habits. From the taking consciousness, here, seven consciousnesses arise. They accumulate seeds and so forth there, causing them to increase. This is called the cessation of characteristics, that is, the cessation made by one's own characteristics. Mahamati, where does the continuous cessation arise from? Mahamati, where from means where it dwells and what it is focused on. Where it dwells means it dwells in the eye and so forth, that is, where eye consciousness arises. What it is focused on means it is focused on form and so forth. Among them, where it dwells means the habits of proliferation of beginningless time, the habits of bad places. What it is focused on means taking one's own mind appearance as the object of consciousness and discriminating, that is, with various confused habits, for the inner sense bases such as the eye, like the appearance of gardenia flowers in the inner fruit, grasping as the place of dwelling and pervasively imagining, like dreams and so forth. And the appearance of the grasping habit being fully ripened is merely the aspect of the object of one's own mind appearance. Therefore, neither of these two sense bases has an external meaning. As the sutra says: What arises from the seed is consciousness, what appears and arises, for the two kinds of sense bases, those were spoken by that Victorious One. Due to the power of inner disturbance, various confusions are of two kinds, some are of a clear nature, like things such as dizziness and fainting. Some are unclear, that is, discriminating.

And it is accompanied. Both states appear like dreams and so on. The habit of bad states is the habit of faults, which is the state of ignorance where one cannot abide in samsara. The observation of wisdom is to eliminate the selflessness of phenomena and persons through complete understanding. Great wisdom is like this: for example, a particle of clay and a lump of clay are neither the same nor different, just like gold and ornaments. Great wisdom, if the held particle is different, then it is not composed of those particles. Because it is composed of those clay particles, it is not different. If it is not different, then there is no difference between the lump of clay and the particles. Similarly, great wisdom, the various manifestations of entering consciousness, if they are different from the characteristics of the lineage of the alaya consciousness, then it will not arise from the cause of the alaya consciousness. If it is not different, then when the entering consciousness ceases, the alaya consciousness will also cease, and so on, the content is very extensive. The appearance of extremely small particles as a collection, if it obtains a higher level, it should be clearly called a lump. The difference of the fruit, the substance with limbs is composed of dust, how can there be a difference? The consideration of Niyaya meaning, like houses, villages, forests, etc., it is not perceived except for the place of gathering. Those differences of their respective levels do not exceed their own kind, just as the waves of the ocean do not exceed the kind of water. Similarly, the measure of the great, the eye and other consciousnesses do not abide on the basis of measure, and merely determining the measure of sesame seeds as the object, can a measure as large as a mountain arise? Or, can both small and many places produce large quantities? If so, then it will become the fault of the nature of the gathering of limb substances, therefore, it is not a lump composed of extremely small dust. Just as the Samkhya school generally believes, it is heavy in that direction, that color, other substances besides those.
