Just as the differences in wisdom gradually arise from cultivating the direct perception of earth, listening, and thinking, so too do those who are newly born recognize the differences in wisdom and so forth. Therefore, it can be inferred that they are accustomed to past habits. Thus, the measure of proving the existence of other worlds is what the differences of the wise guru are, and those are what arise initially from hearing and thinking, like the differences in the great intelligence of students. The differences in wisdom and so forth of the newly born also include the recognition of joy, fear, and sorrow, because there is a prior certainty of clinging to pleasure and pain in the minds of acceptance, rejection, and equanimity. Even newly born infants are angry and fearful in some places, and happy in others. Likewise, they are seen to reject in some places and accept in others. Therefore, it can be inferred that they have past habits. Therefore, the continuum of the mind is uninterrupted. In samsara, the establishment of both affliction and purification depends on itself, and is related to karma and its result, not to external things. Therefore, the noble Mahamati, wishing to understand especially for the benefit of others, asked. The All-Knowing One also extensively elaborated on the common and specific distinctions. Consciousness has three aspects: the nature of entering, the nature of action, and the nature of lineage. Those consciousnesses of the eye and so forth that enter into the appearances of forms and other objects are the consciousnesses of entering. That which is the immediate knowledge, the effort of action, is the nature of action. That which is the pervasive alaya-consciousness is the nature of lineage. How is this proven here? The body, enjoyment, and place appear; the alaya arises universally. The eight and nine consciousnesses are likewise like the ocean and its waves. In the dream state, the single consciousness manifests as many objects and subjects. There, forms and other objects do not exist, nor do the eye and so forth.

And there is no knowing, because it holds what pervades all places, and as the object to be grasped, only the Alaya-vijñāna appears. The All-Knowing One established two types in that very sutra. The consciousnesses spoken of by Mahamati with eight characteristics are, in summary, of two types: the appearing consciousness and the consciousness that distinguishes individual objects. Mahamati, how does the appearing consciousness hold the appearance, just like an image in a mirror? For all knowers, it is like holding form and appearing as form. Mahamati, the appearing consciousness and the consciousness that distinguishes individual objects are those consciousnesses that comprehend the object. The appearing consciousness, up to the eye consciousness and so forth. The consciousness that distinguishes individual objects is the mind consciousness. That is, it distinguishes individual objects such as form. The eye consciousness and so forth, know that the All-Knowing One said to be non-discriminating. That itself is non-different in nature, because it is only for the sake of comprehension. One's cause is one, that is, the mind consciousness is the immediately preceding condition for the eye consciousness and so forth, and those eye consciousnesses and so forth also approach becoming the immediately preceding condition for the mind consciousness. Mahamati, for that, the appearing consciousness arises from the cause of the completely transformed inconceivable habit. The consciousness that distinguishes individual objects, like dizziness and fainting and so forth, there, the external object is not the cause, but from the power of the continuum of beginningless habits and the mind planted without samadhi, and the teachings of superior and non-superior dharmas, the discriminating consciousness arises, appearing in various ways. However, the appearances that are confused in various ways are those appearances that arise from within, and one after another, one's cause is one, which is the sense consciousness and the mind
