Like dreams and illusions, there is no external object to be understood other than being understood. Since this is the case, the external objects spoken of by the Samkhya, Nyaya, Vaisheshika, Mimamsa, Lokayata, and Vaisheshika schools are unreasonable, because any knowledge that appears separately, such as blue, is like the appearance of being attached to one's own object, such as being blurred. The gross and subtle of the external object, when distinguished in terms of direction, are empty like houses, villages, forests, and so on. The dharmas conjectured by children, such as earthenware pots, those that do not touch the body, become empty when distinguished. Even minute particles are empty when the parts are distinguished in terms of direction. In this way, after thoroughly observing with vipashyana, one will abandon it. Although they appear separately, wisdom cannot observe them like blurred images, reflections, dreams, and illusions. Therefore, the gross and subtle dharmas conjectured by children are abandoned by wisdom itself, because they are not clung to. So, what are the non-existent dharmas? Whatever is not of self-nature, that is, without self-nature, without characteristics, the conceptual thoughts, those that arise from the cause of things, whether correct or incorrect, seeing that there is no place to enter, therefore one will abandon the non-existent dharmas. The so-called absence of self-nature, the conceptual thought without characteristics, is that for those who cling to their own characteristics, like form and so on, there is no separate appearance. The meaning of those is the conceptual thought of permanence and self, and what arises from that cause is the cause of no conceptual thought. The so-called not arising from the correct is because it does not arise from the correct separate appearance, so it does not arise. Seeing that there is no place to enter, one will abandon the non-existent dharmas, therefore it is said: Like children's conceptual thoughts, so things are non-existent. That is, generating permanence, self, happiness, and purity in external objects. Those are impermanence, selflessness, suffering, and emptiness.

Through complete understanding, the nature of the inverted knowledge of non-existent dharmas will be abandoned. Furthermore, what are the dharmas that are not self-existent? For example, the horns of a rabbit, a female mule, a donkey, the horns of a horse, the child of a barren woman, and so on, because they are not self-existent. The so-called "because they are not self-existent" means that since rabbit horns and the like have not arisen, they also do not appear separately. Other dharmas caused by other powers, such as the arising of the nature of dreams, illusions, mirages, etc., and the clinging to things that have the nature of destruction, are merely the appearance of what is grasped, and have not arisen like the certainty of external objects. Rabbit horns and the like are merely the meaning of sounds. As the teacher Dharmakirti said: Beginningless habits arise, the ultimate result of discrimination, the meaning of sound is the three dharmas, the basis of both existent and non-existent things. Just as pots and the like should be abandoned because they cannot be grasped by discriminating consciousness, so too should the objects of discrimination be abandoned. Therefore, both existent and non-existent dharmas are abandoned. The so-called abandonment of existent and non-existent dharmas means that in whatever place things that can function, such as pots and the like, appear clearly, if they are analyzed by wisdom, they will be abandoned by emptiness. What need is there to mention the non-existent dharmas such as rabbit horns, which have not arisen and have no appearance? It is even easier to abandon them, because they are inherently ungraspable. As it is said in the Sutra itself: The companion of existence brings forth non-existence, and existence is also brought forth by the companion of non-existence. Therefore, do not think of it as non-existent, nor think of existence as permanent. Lord of Lanka, what you said about how to abandon existent and non-existent dharmas, this is how it is explained. The All-Knowing One has already explained how to distinguish between existent and non-existent dharmas, including appearance and non-appearance, and how to abandon them because they cannot be grasped by wisdom. Furthermore, Lord of Lanka, what you said about the previous Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Enlightened Buddhas, I have also asked them, and they have also answered me. Lord of Lanka, the so-called "previous" is merely an empty word of discrimination, and so on.
