By fully understanding the differences, one becomes omniscient. Thus, practices such as considering "other" and "self," cow-vow, peacock-vow, dwelling in ashes, water seat, five-fire vow, enduring cold and heat, sleeping on thorns, considering auspicious and inauspicious, milk and non-milk, water, wind, sesame, rice, barley, fruits, flowers, and root foods—how do those who practice these distinguish liberation? Bathing, fire offerings, wearing ash threads, letting hair hang loose, and boasting of morality and vows lead to samsara. Because they do not examine with wisdom and do not know the cause of irreversible regression, not only do they not attain liberation, but the Vajramala states that beings fall into hell. They themselves are destroyed by wrong views and destroy others. Can auspicious signs, cow dung, urine, vegetables, turnips, bilva fruits, etc., distinguish liberation? If one fully understands the selflessness of phenomena and prevents attachment to them, then liberation is possible. All those of great intellect who think of falling into extremes imagine nirvana, that is, they practice discrimination by recognizing the two extremes of existence and non-existence as 'this is not.' They do not know the liberation that does not discriminate between existence and non-existence. As it appears in the Seven Hundred Verses: 'This itself is nirvana, which is the state of no thought.' The Omniscient One strives to accomplish just that. As long as the mind moves and wanders, there is no nirvana anywhere. Where there is going and coming, there is birth and death, so how can one imagine nirvana? 'Here, there is no entering and no returning.' That is, whoever is born wherever, is enlightened right there, so no one enters another place or another time. The permanent self and sentient beings, etc., whatever is permanent, neither enters nor returns, because the permanent nature has no other.

Therefore, those who cling to permanence and self cannot attain liberation. Because of clinging to self, they experience the suffering of samsara. If one desires to cling to self even in liberation and nirvana, how can clinging to self be reversed? Those who proclaim no-self, because they do not cling to self, attain nirvana through wisdom. As it says in the Madhyamaka: Nirvana has no distinctions, where there is no cessation of samsara, there one considers there to be samsara, there are no distinctions in nirvana. Therefore, the Buddhas contemplate with the liberation that does not distinguish between existence and non-existence. This is the fourteenth chapter on liberation from the third chapter of the Explanation of the Lankavatara Sutra by Yeshe Pal Zangpo. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Mahamati asked the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, by whom are self and other Bodhisattvas, and so on? Bhagavan, are the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha made, unmade, cause, effect, nature, the basis of nature, speech, what is to be spoken, wisdom, what is to be known, or such words, in the definitive sound, one or different? The Bhagavan replied: Mahamati, if the Tathagata were made, then he would be impermanent. Because of impermanence, all fruits would become the Tathagata. What is the thought of all the Buddhas? It is a mistake in the consciousness of the two aspects of the grasper and the grasped, it is a fabrication of cause and effect related to action and agent. Because of the distinction of definitive words, therefore, because of action it is the fruit, because of the agent it is the cause. But when they are momentary, both moments do not exist. Therefore, no one does anything. Because this exists after the former, therefore this exists, and it is named as dharma only because of this. All actions are momentary, unstable, where is the agent? What arises is the agent, and the agent is also called that. Action and agent are manifestly related, so the Tathagata is not made. The aspect of the two
