That will then transform. The phrase "in order to realize the two selflessnesses" means to fully understand the two selflessnesses of persons and phenomena. Fully understanding the selflessness of phenomena means knowing emptiness when examining forms and so on. The selflessness of persons means that everything that exists is momentary, like the sound of cymbals and flowing water, and so on. The phrase "the two afflictions are completely eliminated, and the two obscurations are completely purified" means that by understanding the two selflessnesses of phenomena and persons, the afflictive obscurations and the obscurations to knowledge are eliminated. Thus, when the two obscurations are completely purified, one becomes solely omniscient. Only a Buddha can increase the accumulation of merit and wisdom from higher to higher levels. The obscuration of karma is eliminated in the first ground itself. When the afflictive obscuration is eliminated, the path of seeing arises, and the obscuration to knowledge becomes thinner. The nature of ignorance, which is without afflictions and is to be abandoned by the tenth ground, the obscuration to knowledge, unequal abiding, and so on, is abandoned on the path of meditation. Therefore, having completely abandoned ignorance, through the stages of the grounds, the pure wisdom that can benefit oneself and others, like being free from cataracts, enters into all the mandalas to be known. Like illusions and reflections, abiding in the samadhi with pure worldly appearances, reversing the appearances of mind, mind, and the consciousness of mind, that itself is nirvana. Mind is the alaya-consciousness. The ego-mind itself is the mind. That which grasps objects is called consciousness. Thus, the alaya-consciousness that appears as body, enjoyment, and place is eliminated, and is called mirror-like wisdom. The consciousness of mind with ego-grasping is called the wisdom of equality. The consciousnesses of eye and so on are eliminated, and are shown as discriminating wisdom. The immediately following consciousness of mind associated with them is transformed, and is spoken of as the wisdom of accomplishing activities in the sutras such as the Buddha-ground. Thus, the samadhi with appearances and without appearances
