Those characteristics of permanence, self, grossness and subtlety, and those characteristics of clinging to external dust, are not born as the nature of things. The absence of inherent birth means that the appearance of blue, yellow, etc., due to other powers, is like dreams and illusions, without the nature of birth. The ultimate absence of nature is the accomplishment, which is emptiness, free from the appearance of duality. In this way, it is not contradictory to explain the Mahayana teachings in the manner of the Lankavatara Sutra and the Samdhinirmocana Sutra. Some people think that permanence and being established by other powers also do not exist, and those who perceive such distinctions are establishing harm to the Dharma, as is read in the Samdhinirmocana Sutra. The statement "not born from existence or non-existence" means that something that exists cannot arise immediately, because it already exists, so what else needs to be done? Something that does not exist cannot arise either, because what else can be done for it? Because something that does not exist does nothing, it becomes a negation of action. As it says in the Salu Lujangwa Sutra: "I did not do it, he did not do it, neither did both, the arising from dependent origination was not done." Because I cannot be without cause. Others also cannot do it through the association of the agent and the action. Just as the prophets distinguish, the agent is autonomous. The best thing the agent desires is karma. The best accomplishment is action, and so on. Therefore, the agent, action, deed, and what is done cannot be clearly related. When one moment exists, the second moment does not exist, so it is not related to anything. Qualities do not transfer because they do not exist simultaneously, and because the nature of cause and effect are different. It is also not from nature, because the characteristics of appearance and non-appearance are different, like wood and ashes, etc., they are not exactly the same. It is also not dependent on the senses, because how can the pure suffer from the sorrow of others? Who made the ignorance of the impure? Likewise, Brahma, etc.

For those who proclaim the existence of two selves, there is the same fault of liberation and non-liberation, wealth and poverty, and so on. The statement "It is not permanent" means that permanence has not arisen. Because it has not arisen, it is non-existent, like the child of a barren woman. If simultaneous and gradual functioning are contradictory, then permanence, like a rabbit's horn, is impossible. The statement "It is not annihilation" means that it is not without cause. Rather, it is recollection, arising from the cause of previous experience. Depending on the continuum, for the joy, fear, and sorrow that arise immediately, because it is thought, one can infer previous habits. For the minds of taking, rejecting, and equanimity, there is no doubt that they accomplish happiness and suffering. Because they existed previously, even children accomplish happiness and suffering in objects, and joy and displeasure arise. Thus, because this exists after the former, it is said that "This exists because that exists," which is dependent arising. Other things like birth are not reasonable. Therefore, dependent arising is not arising, and this has been explained many times. Not arising in this way, but another similar moment arising, is observing birth and so on in the form of confused appearances. The place of superimposition on permanence and oneness is observing in different places. On the relationship between the agent and the action, it is superimposing on the gross and subtle of external objects, and due to the power of others, one enters greatly into the aspect of duality. Observing on pots and blankets, and permanent things like houses, villages, and forests, when separated, are emptiness itself. Likewise, emptiness of the aspect of duality, naturally luminous, the essence of the ultimate truth that is non-dual, should be indicated as things. Without thought and without appearance, with things and non-things, without discrimination and unspeakable, the stream of moments, the nature of correct knowing, as it is, is known by those who abide in samadhi, which is different from the sense consciousness of definite entry, and like the correct knowing of holding the breath. There, the indication of things and non-things, as well as birth, assertion, limbs, and so on, and valid cognition.
