From that which is beyond, reappearing and teaching the Dharma to the retinue, or is it a Tathagata from another direction who comes here to teach the Dharma? Or is it that this worthy one himself attains enlightenment and teaches the Dharma? In order to dispel such doubts, Ananda said, "Thus I have heard." Furthermore, other teachers say that it is called "Thus" because it shows the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, of the three times, past, present, and future, in complete agreement without omission. Or, because the suchness of all dharmas is one and unchanging, it is called "Thus"; or, because the noble Ananda repeated exactly what he heard from the Bhagavat, it is called "Thus." "I have heard" means that I have personally heard this Dharma, not that I have heard it through transmission from another, so it is said, "I have heard." "I" refers to the worldly designation that is imputed to the five aggregates, and it is called "I," but it is not like the imputation of the non-Buddhists, but like the imputation of "view-giving" and "offering-giving," it is called "I." Furthermore, why is it that here, without specifying who heard it, it is generally said, "I have heard"? Because Ananda heard much, accumulated much hearing, his hearing was like an ocean, and all the Tripitaka of the three vehicles were collected by Ananda, so the name was not specified. Hearing is the combination of the ear faculty and consciousness, which gives rise to the pride of hearing. Only hearing is mentioned, and not seeing, etc., because the wisdom of hearing precedes the realization of profound meaning, and because in this realm the deeds of the Buddha are performed through sound, so hearing is mentioned. Again, by saying "I have heard," it is proclaimed just as the Tathagata said, and in order to eliminate the extremes of exaggeration and denigration, it is said, "Thus I have heard." "At one time" means that here the perfection of time is shown. This is of two kinds: the King of Dharma intends to act for the benefit of beings with compassion, and the time when many fortunate beings ripen coincides with the uninterrupted teaching and becomes one time. Furthermore, there are two kinds of time: the time of reason and the time of mere consciousness. Among these, the time of reason is the teaching and the
