Commentary on the Holy Dharma Puṇḍarīka, The Root of the Earth. Commentary on the Holy Dharma Puṇḍarīka, The Root of the Earth. Commentary on the Holy Dharma White Lotus Sutra. The commentary on the Holy Dharma Puṇḍarīka was translated from Chinese. Volume One. To explain this sutra, it should be divided into four aspects: the introduction to the explanation of the sutra, the meaning of each chapter of this sutra, the order of the chapters, and the explanation of the text. The introduction to this sutra also has five aspects: introduction, preface, dispelling doubts, showing the conduct of prophecy, showing the benefits of this life and the next, and showing the time and faculties. The introduction also has five aspects: conduct, aspiration, seeking, holding, and signs. Achieving the unsurpassed Buddhahood also requires having pure conduct. Conduct must also be guided by aspiration. Even with conduct and aspiration, one must diligently seek and hold in order to obtain the fruit. Considering benefiting many beings with the perfect fruit, great signs are shown for expounding this profound sutra. The appearance of the Buddha, the Bhagavan, in the world is also for a great purpose. Among them, the basis of conduct, as stated in the "Expedient Means" chapter, the commentary on this sutra, Suvanadhu, shows eight profound aspects. In the past, countless Buddhas were served and revered. The actions of the Buddha, the Bhagavan, and the diligence and perfect fame in countless actions, the Tathagata realized that the profound and unprecedented Dharma is difficult to understand, therefore it is taught according to each individual's wishes, which cannot be understood by Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Among them, the grasped and the grasper are extremely profound, and reading and reciting are also extremely profound. Conduct is extremely profound, the fruit is extremely profound, the mind of increasing merit is extremely profound, the faith in the ultimate meaning is extremely profound, the unsurpassed is extremely profound, entering is extremely profound, and the unique is extremely profound. This transcends the conduct of Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas.

Especially because of its excellence, these profound teachings completely accomplish all the deeds of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, possessing the conduct of the One Vehicle, and achieving the cause of all-knowingness, they lead to the attainment of the unsurpassed fruit. Therefore, to show the cause of that beginning, this excellent Dharma is taught. Among them, the cause of aspiration is also stated in the chapter on Skillful Means: Shariputra, in the past, like all sentient beings, I made the aspiration to become a supreme, perfect, and complete Buddha. That aspiration was fulfilled, and I attained mastery over liberating sentient beings. Just as in the past I made vows and aspirations, and those vows were in accordance with conduct and fruit, so too, to lead all sentient beings into that conduct, that meaning is taught. Among them, the cause of seeking is stated in the chapter on Devotion: In the past, I sought this excellent Dharma with tireless effort for many eons because I desired it. In the past, when I was a king, I sounded the conch shell in the four directions, and when I sought the Dharma, I served and revered countless times in order to hear the Dharma from the hermit. This is the cause of seeking to hear the Dharma from a spiritual friend, and it is shown at the beginning. Among them, the cause of upholding is, among the eight profound teachings mentioned earlier, first, in the past, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, served and revered countless hundreds of thousands of Buddhas. Here, the Bodhisattva, from offering to Buddhas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, gradually served many Buddhas, and in order to associate with spiritual friends for a long time, by upholding and reciting the sutras, the six faculties are purified, and in order to constantly serve many Buddhas, therefore, upholding and reciting itself is shown to be profound. Among them, the omen is that the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, having attained the unsurpassed fruit, intended to teach this sutra. In order to show omens to the Bodhisattvas beforehand, divine flowers rained down, the earth shook, and light illuminated, so many retinues looked up to the Buddha's face, and with joyful and delighted minds, they thought that now the Bhagavat intends to teach the excellent Dharma, the Lotus Sutra.
