Rato. After that, in order to give medicine to the king of that country, the medicine was mixed with milk. The king rebuked the doctor, saying, "You used to say that milk was poison, so why do you mix the medicine to be eaten with milk now?" The doctor replied, "If you only drink milk alone, then it is true to say that. But now it is mixed with medicine, and it is not right not to use it when it is beneficial for the disease. The teachings of the Tathagata should also be viewed in the same way." Regarding faculties, just as it is said in the Great Nirvana Sutra, all sentient beings have the same faculties, because all have the nature of the Tathagatagarbha, so all that is reached by the mind will attain the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Again, it is said in the sutra that all the Buddha lands of the ten directions are one vehicle, without two or three vehicles, only skillful means are used. This sutra also teaches the one vehicle, so the nature is also the same. There are two kinds of nature, namely, the nature of accomplishment and the nature of practice. The nature of accomplishment refers to the fact that all sentient beings have the Tathagatagarbha, as stated in the sutras. The nature of practice refers to the nature that can be accomplished through practice. There are two kinds of sentient beings, those with nature and those without nature. Sentient beings who have been revolving in the six realms from beginningless time are sentient beings who rely on practice, that is, sentient beings with nature. Those without nature are those who, even if they generate the mind of enlightenment and strive diligently, can only obtain the merit of gods and humans, and cannot attain unsurpassed enlightenment. In the Noble Lankavatara Sutra, there are five lineages: the lineage of Shravakas, the lineage of Pratyekabuddhas, the lineage of Tathagatas, the uncertain lineage, and the lineage of those without lineage. There are two kinds of those without lineage: sentient beings who have burned all roots of virtue, and Bodhisattvas who, with great compassion, are connected with the limits of sentient beings and do not pass into Nirvana. Therefore, the intention of explaining this sutra is also to teach the one vehicle to those who have the lineage of Bodhisattvas, just as one rain nourishes three different plants, causing them to mature separately, these three plants being the Shravakas.

It is taught for the sake of... From here onwards is the second calculation, which is the teaching of the scriptures of this Sutra itself. Furthermore, in general, four ways are taught for all the Sutras: the scriptures of inherent existence, that is, the nature of the five aggregates exists as entities; the scriptures of self-illuminating nature, that is, all phenomena are not substantial, but only exist as characteristics; the scriptures of the destruction of characteristics, such as the Prajnaparamita Sutra, which even eliminates the characteristics of phenomena and teaches emptiness; and the scriptures of teaching reality, such as the Ornamented Tree Sutra, which clearly shows reality and explains the Madhyamaka principle. Among these four, this Sutra should be regarded as the fourth scripture. Furthermore, the scriptures of individual Shravakas differ. There are twenty-two different scriptures, such as the Mahasanghika, etc. Although there are many separate statements due to different views, in short, there are three types: the Sarvastivadins, the scriptures of the Hinayana, such as the Agamas, etc., which teach that even the ultimate nature of emptiness is not different, like the Prajnaparamita Sutra, which teaches emptiness but is not contrary to existence. The Ornamented Tree Sutra and the Samdhinirmocana Sutra, etc., also eliminate the extremes of both existence and non-existence and teach that the characteristics of conditioned and unconditioned phenomena exist. The attachment to self and what belongs to self is only eliminated and does not go beyond that. In the Ornamented Tree Sutra, when the Tathagata spoke a single word, sentient beings understood it according to their respective faculties. Furthermore, in other Sutras, the Tathagata, from the time of his enlightenment until the age of forty, constantly taught that all phenomena are unborn, unarisen, without going, without coming, without attainment, without loss, without characteristics, and with only one characteristic, but the understanding of sentient beings differed, which was also due to their respective faculties. Just as the sound of the wish-fulfilling drum of the gods produces different teachings, the gradual and simultaneous realization of the Mahayana and Hinayana should also be viewed in the same way. Secondly, explaining the name of this Sutra, this Sutra is called the Lotus Sutra of the Wonderful Dharma. This Sutra is a sign of intending to explain this Sutra, light from the urna hair between the eyebrows.
