Since it is shown for the sake of turning back those who have turned away from (the sole) nature of mind, here the only vehicle is shown to be of definitive meaning. In the sutra, from "Monks, this is..." to "explaining nirvana," this shows the convincing reason, that in order to make the various beliefs of sentient beings accord with their respective minds, the expedient Dharma is taught. For sentient beings with dull faculties, merely in order to turn them back from the five desires, it is shown to turn back from samsara. In order to turn them back from that (five desires), the only vehicle is introduced into the source of jewels. In the sutra, from "For example, monks, from the parable..." to "become even more superior," this parable shows the parable of the previous guiding meaning, and later shows the parable of the definitive meaning. That guiding meaning also has four parables: the parable of liberation from the wilderness of nirvana; the parable of the retinue being discouraged; the parable of the merchant showing many expedients; and the parable of showing the way to the island. This is the first. Five hundred yojanas refers to wandering in the five realms. The island of jewels refers to the island of nirvana. In the sutra, from "From among those, the single characteristic of nirvana..." to "they are liberated," "characteristic" refers to the Buddha Bhagavan, and his qualities are also five: clarity refers to sharp faculties; wise refers to distinguishing good and evil; knowledge refers to the knowledge of ultimate truth and conventional truth; virtuous refers to being endowed with all qualities; liberating on the path refers to liberating from the five realms. In the sutra, from "Those many beings..." to "return again," this shows the parable of returning, that is, the practitioners of the Great Vehicle practice austerities for sixty kalpas, the bodhisattva's conduct feels tired, and because of the conduct of the noble ones, they are frightened and think that they will tend towards small fruits. In the sutra, from "Then, monks..." to "manifesting a city," this is the parable of showing a manifested city. There are also four: keeping in mind, showing the city, abiding there, and showing the qualities of that city. This is combined with the second of the first. In the Mahayana Samgraha Sutra, it is also said that like the drum of the gods, there is no special thought.

Just as sound arises without effort, the Tathagata's compassion also gazes upon sentient beings three times during the day and three times during the night through the power of spontaneous accomplishment, that is its meaning. The "hundred or two hundred yojanas" refers to understanding it according to the circumstances of samsara and suffering. The "city" refers to the city of dhyana and samadhi, which should be connected with the Mahayana's nirvana. In the sutra, from "He for those people" to "entering the jewel island," it refers to the merits of abiding there, being without fear, and entering the city. The merit of entering therein is obtaining happiness and the cessation of suffering. In the sutra, from "Thereafter, the monks" to "arise the thought of coolness," it refers to showing the metaphor of the weary resting, and this has two aspects. Previously, the learners gathered their minds and generated diligence, and later, the non-learners were placed on the path of liberation, and because they had not escaped the death of nirvana with residue, they generated the thought of entering the city, the status attained by the non-learners is cessation, and those who have reached the end of the path also generate the thought of transcendence and coolness. In the sutra, from "knowing to rest by the sign" to "do you want it," for the two metaphors, this shows the definite meaning, previously it showed manifestation, and later it showed reality. The manifested city refers to the place of the two vehicles, showing that the place of rest is similar to the place of rest, the Mahayana is the source of jewels, approaching from there, this is the saying of the metaphor. In the sutra, from "Similarly, monks" to "should be abandoned," it is connecting the later meaning, previously it was connected with expedient speech, and later it was connected with definite speech, it is transcending and abandoning samsara and suffering. In the sutra, from "Thereafter, these sentient beings" to "not okay," this shows the bodhisattva's discouragement in difficult practice. In the sutra, from "Tathagata" to "showed the two grounds," it is connecting the metaphor and the meaning, the two grounds refer to the two faculties.
