And it is said in "The Name Has Passed." This is because, in the commentary on this, it is considered that "discipline" refers to the Pratimoksha vows, because it is through this that the senses are tamed. Other than the Upavasatha vows, the other seven types of Pratimoksha vows are abandoned due to four reasons: in the presence of someone who understands, abandoning the precepts taken from the depths of one's heart; abandoning those of the same kind; the simultaneous occurrence of (violating) characteristics; and because that cause severs the roots of virtue. The Upavasatha vows are based on the previous four reasons, plus the end of the night. Therefore, in summary, these can be summarized as five reasons for abandoning vows. Why do these reasons lead to the abandonment of vows? Because they generate aspects that contradict proper adherence; because the body must be abandoned; because the basis is weakened; because the foundation is severed; and because the time limit has passed. The scriptures are in accordance with correct reasoning, elaborately explain the texts, and in the "Great Commentary," the five reasons for abandoning vows appear, which also correspond to the teachings of the Abhidharmakosha. The "Sutra on the Variety of Minds" says: If, while abiding in the discipline of vows, the first downfalls occur, this is only a fault, not an abandonment of vows, so it should be known that this person is abiding in the discipline and is also one whose discipline is broken. If he feels regret, then he will abandon the broken discipline and abide in a state of possessing discipline. For example, if a rich man is in debt, he can be called rich and also called indebted. Once the debt is paid off, he can only be called rich. Just like that. The Abhidharmakosha and the Great Commentary also state this. In the Dharma Secret Sect, it is said that there are six reasons that lead to the abandonment of vows, five of which are the same as those stated in the Abhidharmakosha. Also, the destruction of the Dharma is proclaimed. Therefore, in the Abhidharmakosha, some other schools say that the disappearance of the true Dharma also leads to the abandonment of the Pratimoksha vows, such as when the true Dharma disappears, the place of learning and the karma of boundary-setting

etc., will all disappear, which is what it says. The Sutra School's treatises say that vows are abandoned by five causes, which is also in accordance with the teachings of the Treasury. It does not appear in "the night is exhausted," but it also shows that it is a serious offense. Therefore, from that treatise itself, some other schools say that of the four serious offenses, whichever offense occurs, the vows of a novice and a monk will be abandoned. It will appear. If combined with the Mahayana teachings, the vows of the Hearers are abandoned by five causes, which is also in accordance with the words of the Sutra School. In that treatise, the Yoga Practice Ground, it says, "If the causes and conditions are complete, will the vows taken by a monk be abandoned?" In short, there are five causes: because the objects of training have been abandoned, because the root of offenses has been especially practiced, because the night has passed and two nights have arisen, because the root of virtue has been cut off, and because those of the same kind have been abandoned, the vows taken by a monk will be abandoned. If the supreme Dharma is completely destroyed and the supreme Dharma disappears, then those who have not taken the vows of a monk cannot take them, and those who have taken them should know that they will not be completely abandoned, which is what it says. The extensive explanation is as shown in that treatise. Manjushri, the eleven kinds of characteristics of the Dharma that I have spoken of, as well as the distinctions and teachings, that is called the Mother. From here on is the third, showing the explanation of the characteristics of the Mother. This also has two aspects: briefly stating the number, briefly stating the answer, and asking the question, this is the first. Among them, "What are the eleven characteristics?" etc., is the second question, and the answer is used to explain the distinctions. It shows the question and answer here. This is the question itself. The characteristic of conventional truth, the characteristic of ultimate truth, the characteristic of the object of the dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment, the characteristic of the nature, the characteristic of the essence, the characteristic of its fruit, and experiencing it.
