Extensive Commentary on the Holy Sūtra Unraveling the Profound Meaning. Wensai. Extensive Commentary on the Holy Sūtra Unraveling the Profound Meaning. Wensai. The Holy Sūtra Unraveling the Intention. Chapter Fifty-Five. The Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara again asked the Blessed One, "O Blessed One, how many are those who are universally deluded in those lands? How many are the adverse aspects of the evil abodes?" This below is the third, starting from the twenty-one types of universal delusion, showing the distinctions of the lands. This is shown in two ways: asking and answering. This is the first, asking how many are universally deluded among the aforementioned eleven, and what is the evil abode that has become an adverse aspect. These universal delusions and evil abodes are explained differently in the teachings. For example, the Sūtra of the Complete Liberation of Boundaries, the Sūtra Unraveling the Profound Meaning, and the Treatise on the Grounds of Yoga Practice, show that they are in accordance with what is said in this very sūtra. In the chapter on purification from the Holy Golden Light Sūtra, only the names are listed, and there is no detailed explanation. In the Treatise Compendium of the Great Vehicle translated by Langgi at the time, and in the commentary written by the teacher Vasubandhu, it is also shown that there are twenty-two types of universal delusion and eleven evil abodes. Among the twenty-two types of universal delusion, the first eight enable the manifestation and accomplishment of birth and death associated with the four types. The following six enable the manifestation and accomplishment of causal birth and death. The next six enable the manifestation and accomplishment of birth and death with existence. The last two enable the manifestation and accomplishment of birth and death without existence. That refers to the Vipāka of transformation, which is called an evil abode. Here, if we examine the commentary on the Compendium of the Great Vehicle translated by Langgi at the time, there are three faults. First, because the Indian example of the commentary on the Compendium of the Great Vehicle itself does not have such a distinction. Second, it is based on the Holy Sūtra Unraveling the Profound Meaning.

Only in what is said, there is no mention of the four aspects of birth and death. Third, due to the obscuration of knowledge, the death transference of things and the death transference of transformation will not manifestly accomplish. From the treatises of the Vijnanavada school, these sutras are widely expounded, and here, in conjunction with this, those words spoken in this very sutra will be explained. The Blessed One said to the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara: 'Noble son, for these there are twenty-two pervasive ignorances and eleven unfavorable places.' From this point onwards, the second part is the Tathagata's truthful answer to what is said. This can also be divided into three: a general indication, a separate explanation, and the intention of what is said, such as noble son, ignorance, etc. This is the first, for the eleven there are twenty-two pervasive ignorances and eleven unfavorable places, therefore it is a general indication. For example, on the first ground there are two kinds of pervasive ignorance, namely the pervasive ignorance of attachment to persons and dharmas, and the pervasive ignorance of the pervasive afflictions of the lower realms, and its unfavorable place, etc., this is the second, a separate explanation. For each of the eleven grounds, there are two ignorances and each unfavorable place, divided into twelve kinds. This is the indication of the two pervasive ignorances and the unfavorable place of the first ground. These two pervasive ignorances also have two explanations in the treatises of the Vijnanavada school. Some say that the aspects of ignorance are generally called ignorance. For example, among the two ignorances of the first ground, whatever is the attachment to self, that is the practice of each ordinary person. Whatever is the ignorance of the afflictions of the lower realms, that is the actions and results of the lower realms, etc. The aspects of ignorance should also be understood as ignorance, and the later ones should be combined in the same way. Some say that pervasive
