Discipline is so called because it subdues the seven types of faults, or because it subdues the six senses. Therefore, it is stated in the Samantapasadika that whatever subdues the actions of body and speech is the meaning of discipline. Furthermore, in the Abhidharmakośa, it is stated that discipline is that which indicates subduing through meaning, because by its power, the senses become greatly subdued. The teachings that are extensively explained in the scriptures and are in accordance with correct reasoning are mostly explained in accordance with what is stated in the Abhidharmakośa. Discipline also has many meanings of names here. Therefore, in the Mahāvibhāṣā, it is said that in the sutras, śīla (藏文:ཤཱི་ལ།,梵文天城体:śīla,梵文罗马拟音:śīla,汉语字面意思:戒), conduct, foot, casket, and action are mentioned for morality. Śīla (藏文:ཤཱི་ལ།,梵文天城体:śīla,梵文罗马拟音:śīla,汉语字面意思:戒) means to cool down, because faults cause the body and mind to burn everywhere, and morality brings happiness and peace, so it is called cooling. Furthermore, faults lead to the intense suffering of the lower realms, and morality leads to the good realms, so it is called cooling. Morality is called conduct because in the world, morality is referred to as conduct. Therefore, when one sees someone with morality, one says that this person has conduct, and when one sees someone whose morality is broken, one says that this person has no conduct. Furthermore, whoever has completely pure morality is the basis of many conducts and leads to nirvana, so it is called conduct. Morality is called a foot because it leads to the good realms and nirvana, just as those with feet abandon fear and reach a comfortable place, so too, those with completely pure morality are liberated from the lower realms and are born in the realms of gods and humans. Alternatively, it is called a foot because it liberates from samsara and leads to the shore of nirvana. Morality is called a casket because it is a collection of virtues.

It is in order to completely hold all lands. Like this, possessing discipline, being complete in virtues and not diminishing, not becoming lost, is like holding the jewels in a treasure chest. The monk Rab Yang said: Discipline is called indestructible. Why is that? Just as one whose feet are not impaired can freely go to a place of happiness, so too, one who is completely pure and possesses discipline can similarly go to Nirvana. As explained extensively in the scriptures, it should be understood as such. Furthermore, in the Treatise on the Treasury (Abhidharmakośa), it says: The names of the vows of individual liberation are different, and this is because: In order to equally classify the painful actions, it is called Śīla Because it is praised by the wise, it is called Supreme Conduct. Because it is the action of one's own nature, it is called Karma. Because it protects body and speech, it is called Restraint. The scriptures extensively explain and demonstrate consistency with what is said in the Treatise on the Treasury through correct reasoning. In the Treatise on the Stages of Yogic Practice (Yogācārabhūmi), it says: Discipline is like this: in order to pacify all the suffering caused by the faults of immoral discipline, and also because it possesses the meaning of complete purity. Restraint is like this: because it is the characteristic of the nature of abandonment. Furthermore, in the Compendium of the Great Vehicle (Mahāyānasaṃgraha), it says: Because it pacifies faults, it is called Taming. Thus, although there are many different names, all of these are different names for Taming. The term "Mother" refers to generating the root of all dharmas and being able to fully reveal them, so it is called "Mother." Therefore, in the scriptures that are in accordance with correct reasoning, the definitive explanation is also called "Mother," because it acts as the "Mother" when explaining the meaning of other sutras. For example, just as the "Mother" of letters generates the letters. Because it generates all knowledge, it is also called "Mother." Therefore, in the Treatise on the Stages of Yogic Practice (Yogācārabhūmi), the Sutra

In order to differentiate, starting from what is particularly explained in these four Sutra Pitakas, one should teach the Sutra Matrika, which is collected by the Tathagata, taught by the Tathagata, and praised and extolled in the treatises. For example, if the letters that make up "Matrika" are not clear, then the Sutras that are not fully contained by the "Matrika" are not clear in meaning. Conversely, the meaning is clear, therefore it is called "Matrika." Furthermore, in the explanation of the treatises, it is definitively stated as follows: Whatever "Matrika" is to be collected from the Sutras, for example, the Sutras of definitive meaning, are called "Matrika." For example, the Tathagata himself extensively distinguishes the characteristics of the nature of all dharmas, and those who are superior to the disciples, who have seen the reality, relying on their own lineage, accurately show the characteristics of the nature of all dharmas, these are also called "Matrika." This "Matrika" is also called "Abhidharma," just as worldly letters, arithmetic, and all treatises have "Matrika," so too should it be understood for the statements in the Sutras that determine the characteristics of the Dharma. Furthermore, for example, in the world, if letters do not have "Matrika," the letters will not be clear; similarly, for the twelve branches of scripture, if the characteristics of the nature of all dharmas are not distinctly established, then the dharmas will not be clear; if they are distinctly established, then the characteristics of the dharmas will be clear. Furthermore, in order to excellently show the characteristics of non-confusion, this "Matrika" is also called "Abhidharma." Apart from this "Matrika," whatever shows the meaning of the Sutras is called "definitively explained." The differences between the Sutra Matrika, the Vinaya Matrika, and the Dharma Characteristic Matrika should be understood as explained in detail in the Yogacarabhumi-sastra. Because these "Matrikas" also have many names, it is from the commentary on the Mahayana-samgraha by Master Vasubandhu.
