Exchanged his clothes for the clothes of a corpse. Then, the Bodhisattva shaved his head, wore the clothes of a corpse, and said, "I have now truly become a renunciate." As it was proclaimed, as described in detail therein. As for "showing asceticism," as it is said in the chapter on asceticism in the "Holy Universally Illuminating Sutra": "The asceticism practiced for six years, neither gods nor humans can practice, only a Bodhisattva bound by one lifetime can practice it." Furthermore, as it is said in the commentary on the "Holy Perfection of Wisdom Sutra": "The non-Buddhists, etc., have deep faith and attachment to asceticism. If the Bhagavan had not practiced asceticism for six years, others would not have deep faith, saying that the prince is accustomed to comfort and cannot practice asceticism." Also, some non-Buddhists who are fond of asceticism can only practice for three months, half a year, or a year. But if someone eats only one sesame seed a day for six years, practicing asceticism, the non-Buddhists think that this is the ultimate of asceticism, and they have deep faith, and thus enter the right path. If the causes and conditions are complete, then asceticism is practiced for six years." As for "abandoning asceticism and attaining perfect enlightenment," as it is said in the "Holy Great Nirvana Sutra": "Although asceticism was practiced for six years, knowing that asceticism cannot lead to enlightenment, it was abandoned. He bathed in the Nairanjana River, received milk porridge from the cowherd girl, went to the Bodhi tree, subdued the evil Mara, and attained the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment." Furthermore, as it is said in the "Holy Universally Illuminating Sutra": "Just as a householder offers milk porridge to the mountain and tree gods in order to desire a son, so after a son is born, he rejoices and praises, one..."

Then, (the milk) was passed from one (cow) to another (cow) to be milked. After that, porridge was cooked with the last thick milk, and the porridge surged out of the copper pot to a height of more than two fathoms. That girl also found it amazing. A Brahmin came there and said to that girl, "This milk porridge is not to be drunk by ordinary people, only those who attain enlightenment on the spot can drink this milk porridge." That girl took the milk porridge and offered it to the righteous Bodhisattva, and as soon as he drank it, he said that he had attained perfect Buddhahood. Furthermore, in the Great Commentary it says, "I did not abandon (asceticism) because I could not endure the hardships of the heretics, but because examining those ascetic practices, in the end, one cannot abandon the afflictions and cannot obtain true benefits. I abandoned those ascetic practices and practiced the excellent Middle Way, and attained unsurpassed Bodhi, and was delivered from the extreme suffering of sentient beings in samsara." It is taught like this. The so-called "turning the wheel of Dharma" should be understood as it was explained earlier. The so-called "complete Nirvana" is stated in the Great Commentary: "As it is said in the Sutra, the Blessed One passed into Nirvana in the city of Kushinagar, under a pair of Sala trees." Why did the Blessed One pass into Nirvana in the city of Kushinagar? The answer is: In order to subdue the giants dwelling in the city of Kushinagar, and also in order to gather and subdue the heretic Subhadra. Some say that it is because the Blessed One repeatedly abandoned his body in that place. It is said in the Sutra, the Blessed One told Ananda: 'The Tathagata has abandoned the body of a Chakravartin six times in this place.' The seventh time, the Tathagata abandoned the body of perfect enlightenment." From here onwards, up to the extensive explanation. Furthermore, the Blessed One said to Ananda: 'Go to the pair of Sala trees and prepare a bed for the Tathagata, with the pillow facing north.' The Tathagata
