This is the answer to the first question. This also has four aspects: This is the first to mention the name and briefly answer. "Why is that?" This phrase is the second to re-examine. Those Bodhisattvas, being individually certain on the first ground, fully understand all the dharmadhatu of all dharmas. Because of that cause and condition, the Bodhisattva's afflictions arise only with knowledge, and not without knowledge, which is the third instruction on correct explanation. Like this, because afflictions are generated after understanding the faults of afflictions, it is called the characteristic of being without pervasive afflictions. In the true sense, even if it is pervasive affliction, it arises from knowledge, so it is called without pervasive affliction. Furthermore, in the Sutra of the Noble Teaching on the Supreme Abode, it is said, Ananda, all Buddhas, in the stage of cause, rely on the Tathagatagarbha to manifest the roots of virtue, and for the sake of benefiting sentient beings, even if they enter the three realms, the suffering of birth and aging, etc., is not actually present for those Bodhisattvas. Why is that? Because in that very reality, they see the Tathagatagarbha. Although they possess afflictions, they will not become those with pervasive afflictions, as detailed in that very sutra. Therefore, the characteristic of being without pervasive afflictions is indicated, which is the fourth conclusion, just a connecting word. Because it is not possible to generate suffering in one's own continuum, there is no fault. This is the answer to the second question: Although they possess afflictions, it is because they are suppressed, and because they cannot generate suffering. This is the summary of not becoming a fault. In the commentary by the teacher No Self-Nature, it is said: Because it does not lead to suffering, there is no fault. Furthermore, in the treatise Compendium of Abhidharma Samuccaya, it is said that even though those Bodhisattvas have not abandoned afflictions, they do not generate all the faults of afflictions, just like poison killed by mantras and medicine. For example, like an Arhat who has abandoned afflictions,

It is said that it does not generate the fault of all defilements. The treatises *Establishment of Consciousness-Only*, *Compendium of Abhidharma*, and *Stages of Yoga Practice* also teach this. Furthermore, the *Compendium of the Great Vehicle* states: "Defilements are subdued but not abandoned, like poison killed by a mantra. The Buddhas, from defilements, attain omniscience by the exhaustion of defilements." The master Asanga, in his commentary, says: "'Defilements are subdued but not abandoned' refers to the state of Bodhisattvas, who subdue defilements without abandoning them. 'Like poison killed by a mantra' is an example. Just as poison killed by a mantra does not abandon its essence but does not transform internally, so too are defilements. Thus, although suppressed by the power of mindfulness and wisdom, the latent tendencies remain. Why are the latent tendencies of defilements left behind? It is because of the fear of quickly entering complete nirvana like the Hearers' Vehicle. Therefore, because defilements are the cause, when defilements are exhausted, one will attain omniscience. As the verse says: 'Well grasped by the power of mindfulness and wisdom, Hearers and Bodhisattvas will attain it. Just as poison is killed by a mantra, faults will manifestly become qualities.'" This is what is said. The commentary by the master Vasubandhu also mostly teaches this. Bodhisattvas, having generated such defilements, are able to avert the cause of suffering in the realm of sentient beings. Therefore, they possess immeasurable qualities. The above explains the answer to the third question. This can be divided into two aspects: showing the answer spoken by the Tathagata, and praising the Bodhisattvas. This is the first, namely, Bodhisattvas intentionally generate defilements in order to destroy the suffering of sentient beings. Therefore, it is said that the defilements of Bodhisattvas are the cause of abandoning suffering. The spoken

Furthermore, Bodhisattvas are specifically dedicated to cutting off the afflictions of sentient beings. Therefore, it is said that the afflictions of sentient beings themselves are the root of suffering, because the manifest accomplishment of the suffering of birth and death arises from afflictions. There are also two necessities for generating afflictions from the first to the seventh bhumi. First, in order to excellently demonstrate that one's own wisdom has the power of mastery, one deliberately generates afflictions, then subdues and completely eliminates them, just as a cat plays with a mouse. Therefore, the commentary by Master Asanga states: 'Sometimes one does not even subdue them; in order to awaken their power, one deliberately generates the mind and allows it to arise for a while.' Second, one generates afflictions, then takes a substantial body and benefits sentient beings. Therefore, one possesses immeasurable qualities. Therefore, the Treatise on the Stages of Yoga Practice states: 'However, Bodhisattvas, through their own afflictions, perform actions that benefit all sentient beings, and thus generate immeasurable merit.' Furthermore, the Compendium of the Great Vehicle states: 'Bodhisattvas, skilled in means, even if they perform the ten actions such as killing, have no faults, and will also generate immeasurable merit and attain enlightenment.' The commentary by Master Asanga states: 'Because they do not generate suffering, there are also no faults. Because they become part of the path, they will also generate immeasurable merit.' The Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara also requested the Bhagavan in this way: 'Bhagavan, the unsurpassed enlightenment that possesses such great qualities and benefits is truly wonderful!' And so on, these are the second part, showing praise of the Bodhisattva. This also has two aspects: praise of the qualities of the Buddha and praise of the qualities of the Bodhisattva. This is the praise of the qualities of the Buddha.
