What is manifested? As it is said in the sutra, a certain monk went to where the Blessed One was, prostrated at his two feet, and sat down on one side, and said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, how swift are the birth and destruction of sentient beings?" The Blessed One replied: "I can say it, but you cannot understand it." That monk said: "Could you please clarify it with some examples?" The Blessed One replied: "There is something called 'instant'. I will show you an example. For example, there are four people who are very skilled in archery, each holding an arrow, standing back to back, wanting to shoot arrows in four directions. Then a very agile and fast person comes and says: 'Hey, shoot your arrows at the same time, and I can catch them all without dropping one.' What do you think? Is the mind very fast?" The monk said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, it is very fast." The Blessed One said: "The speed of that person is not as fast as the speed of a yaksha walking on the ground. The speed of a yaksha walking on the ground is not as fast as the speed of a yaksha flying in the sky. The speed of flying in the sky is not as fast as the speed of the gods of the retinue of the Four Great Kings. The speed of those gods is not as fast as the speed of the lords of the sun and moon palaces. The speed of the lords of the sun and moon palaces is not as fast as the speed of a divine son going to instruct. That is what guides the sun and moon palaces. These gods and so on are increasingly faster, so the birth and death of sentient beings is even faster than those, so the arising and ceasing of an instant does not even last for a moment." It is like what was said. Therefore, we know that the Blessed One did not speak of the true measure of an instant. Why didn't the Blessed One speak of the true measure of an instant to others? The answer is: Because no sentient being can understand it. Could even the noble Shariputra not understand it? The answer is:

Although it is possible to understand, it was not spoken because there was no comprehension of it. The Bhagavan does not teach the Dharma without purpose, so it is said. The so-called 'thang cig' refers to, for example, the blink of an eye. Or it refers to the time it takes to exhale a breath. In the Great Commentary (Mahāvibhāṣā), it is said that one hundred and twenty kṣaṇas are one kṣaṇa. Sixty kṣaṇas are one thang cig, so one thang cig has seven thousand two hundred kṣaṇas. The so-called 'yud tsam' refers to, in the Great Commentary, it is said that thirty thang cigs are one yud tsam, so one yud tsam has twenty-one thousand six hundred kṣaṇas. The so-called 'half-time' refers to, in the commentary on the Noble Perfection of Wisdom, and because there are three periods of time each for day and night, there are six periods. Here, what is said as 'half-time' refers to half of one period. The so-called 'time' refers to one of the six periods. Another explanation is that in the Treasury of Knowledge (Abhidharmakośa), one year is divided into three periods: cold, heat, and rain. Each period has four months. What is said as 'half-time' here refers to the rainy season. What is said as 'time' refers to four months. Although there are two explanations, the former explanation is better. Therefore, the intention of this sutra is to show the accumulation from short to long. In the Treasury of Knowledge, it is shown that the longest time is one day and night, so the former explanation is correct. In the commentary on the Noble Lotus Sutra, it is said that the longest time is one month. Therefore, in that commentary, it is said that because it is impossible to count the sun, day and night, month, time, and year. The so-called sun and day and night refer to, in the Great Commentary, it is said that thirty yud tsams are one day and night, so one day and night has six million four hundred and eight thousand kṣaṇas. This body of the five aggregates, in one day and night, possesses so much impermanence of birth and death. The so-called half-month refers to fifteen days.

The so-called 'month' is thirty days and nights. The so-called 'year' is twelve months. Therefore, in the Abhidharmakośa it is said: One hundred and twenty kṣaṇas are one kṣaṇa. Sixty kṣaṇas are one tatkṣaṇa. Thirty tatkṣaṇas are one muhūrta. Thirty muhūrtas are one day and night. Thirty days and nights are one month. Twelve months are one year. One year can be divided into three seasons: the cold season, the hot season, and the rainy season. Each season has four months. These are explained in detail in the Abhidharmakośa itself. The statement that kṣaṇa etc. are called kalpas is as stated in the Mahāvibhāṣā. Therefore, in that treatise it is asked: Why is it called kalpa? What is the meaning of the word kalpa? It is said: Because it completely distinguishes the parts of the three times, it is called kalpa. For example, by completely distinguishing the time parts of kṣaṇa, tatkṣaṇa, and muhūrta, the day and night are manifestly accomplished. By completely distinguishing the time parts of day and night, the half-month, month, season, and year are manifestly accomplished. By completely distinguishing the times of half-month etc., the kalpa is manifestly accomplished. Because the measure of the kalpa is the end of the complete distinction of time, it has obtained the name of general term. Those who speak of sounds say: Because of completely distinguishing the stages, it is called kalpa. Why is that? Because kalpa is the ultimate stage in the differentiation of conditioned dharmas. As for Asankhya, it is translated as 'innumerable'. Regarding the innumerable, there are different explanations in various teachings. Therefore, the Abhidharmakośa says that in the sixty arithmetic progressions, innumerable is one name. In that treatise, the kalpa can be understood in four ways: the kalpa of destruction, the kalpa of formation, and the great intermediate kalpa. The kalpa of destruction is the period from when beings are no longer born in hell to when the external world is completely destroyed. The kalpa of formation is the period from when the wind mandala arises to when beings are first born in hell.
