It is said that it exists. From the Sutra of Complete Liberation, it is said that it is because it abides in a slight amount of the obscuration of knowledge. From the teachings on the source of the sutras in the Treatise on the Establishment of Mere Cognition, it is said that it is because there is the obscuration of knowledge to be abided in. Therefore, the statement "this is extremely subtle" refers to the latent tendencies. This is the explanation of the complete grasping of actions from the six explanations. By which obscurations are these three types of latent tendencies included? It is said: There are three types of explanations for this. Some say: These three are only the obscuration of knowledge. Some say: The first two are the obscuration of afflictions, and the three latent tendencies are only the obscuration of knowledge. Some say: These three are only the obscuration of afflictions. Although there are three types of explanations, the latter explanation is the correct one, because it is in accordance with the words of the sutra. Are these three types of latent tendencies of the same essence? There are three explanations for this. Some say: The essence of these three types is not the same, because the coarse and the subtle are different. Some say: Because the latter includes the former, the wide and the narrow are different. Some say: Although the difference is shown based on the state of these three, there is no difference in essence. For example, whoever abides in the five grounds is called the one who has destroyed the true friend. Those on the sixth and seventh grounds are called those with weak strength. Those on the eighth ground and above are called extremely subtle. Among the three explanations, the third explanation is the best. The Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara also requested the Blessed One in this way: Blessed One, what is the difference in the way those latent tendencies, those bad abodes, are abandoned? From here onwards is the second, showing the distinction of abandoning bad abodes. This also has two aspects: the request and the showing of the answer. Because it is difficult to understand the meaning with just one sutra passage, therefore, first, the characteristics of the differences between latent tendencies and bad abodes are explained in detail.

Having opened it, the meaning of the words of the root text will be explained below. Among these, what is called 'anuśaya' is the name for the number of seeds. Because the seeds of the two obscurations follow the yogis and the anuśaya does not arise, it is called 'anuśaya'. The afflictive anuśaya that should be abandoned is abandoned upon entering the first bhūmi. Others that should be abandoned through meditation are each abandoned on each bhūmi, also abandoned successively through the uninterrupted path and the path of liberation. Because through the path of liberation, individual discernment is attained. Among these, what is called 'sthānāsthāna' is because of the difference in the power of the seeds of the two obscurations, which makes the contaminated body incapable, therefore it is called 'sthānāsthāna'. It is also called 'vāsanā', which is neither the same as contaminated dharmas nor different, because of the difference in the state of having been abandoned and not having been abandoned, therefore it cannot be said to be the same. Also, because there is no different self-nature apart from the five skandhas, it cannot be said to be different. Because of that reason, on the other hand, the two paths of abandonment, the uninterrupted path and the path of liberation, will also not be abandoned, and the unconditioned that is abandoned individually will also not appear. However, through the power of wisdom, the sthānāsthāna produced by the seeds are eliminated from higher to higher. Those sthānāsthāna and those anuśaya have breadth and narrowness, as it is said in the *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra*. Those seeds of the body that belong to the side of afflictions become what are called 'sthānāsthāna' and 'anuśaya'. Those that belong to the side of maturation, and the side of the unspecified that is different from karma, are only called 'sthānāsthāna', and are not called 'anuśaya'. Those seeds of the side of virtue, such as faith, have neither what is called 'anuśaya' nor what is called 'sthānāsthāna'. What is the reason for that? Because when those dharmas arise, the body will only become capable, and will not become incapable. Just as it is taught in that way, from among those, whatever seeds are included in the side of afflictions are taught as 'sthānāsthāna'.
