It should be known that this place is very deep and difficult to see. Therefore, the Prajñāpāramitā is said to hold the essence of the non-self-nature of all dharmas, and this is the fifth conclusion, which is only a particle. The Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara again asked the Blessed One as follows: Blessed One! Blessed One! As you have said, the pāramitā, the near pāramitā, and the great pāramitā, what is the pāramitā? What is the near pāramitā? What is the great pāramitā? From here onwards is the eighteenth chapter, which shows the door of showing the aspects of the pāramitā. This is also shown by asking and answering, and this is the question itself. This question of the sūtra can also be divided into two: namely, repeating what was said earlier, and stating the object of the question itself. In some versions, three appear from stating the object of the question itself, and two appear from the place of stating the object of the question, so the first question is incomplete. Because in the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra, the Prātimokṣa-sūtra, and the Saṃdhinirmocana-sūtra, three questions also appear, it is obvious that it is incomplete. The Blessed One said to the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara: Son of good family! If the Bodhisattvas have fully cultivated giving and so on from countless kalpas, although they are endowed with virtuous dharmas, the afflictions manifest, and they cannot subdue that ground, but if they can subdue it, that is, in the ground of adhimukti-caryā, entering into small and medium adhimukti, this is called pāramitā. And so on, this shows the second, the Tathāgata's true answer. This is also divided into three from the showing of three, and this is the answer to the first question. These are the differences of the three names of cultivating giving and so on in three countless kalpas, thus, the first countless kalpa

If things like Napa manifest, the six unfavorable factors will all arise, and one will not be able to subdue them; rather, one will be subdued by those six unfavorable factors. For example, the term "land of aspiration" refers to the stage of the land. The term "entering small and medium aspiration" refers to the time of cultivation, because the cultivation of the preceding lands will not yet become very great, but rather it is the stage of entering small and medium aspiration only. The term "that is Paramita" is the conclusion of naming. Furthermore, although the afflictions all arise because one has gradually become empowered by generosity and so forth, which have been fully cultivated from immeasurable time, and one possesses virtuous qualities, one subdues them and is not subdued by them. For example, beginning from the first ground, for example, the term "near Paramita" is spoken as the answer to the second question. This sutra text is also divided into three parts: explanation, indication of the stage of the ground, and conclusion. Thus, from the first ground onwards, because one has gradually become empowered by generosity and so forth, which have been fully cultivated in the second immeasurable kalpas, afflictions such as desire will arise, but one will subdue them and not be subdued by them, which is the meaning of the term "near Paramita." Furthermore, because one has become very empowered by generosity and so forth, which have been fully cultivated from immeasurable time, and one possesses virtuous qualities, all afflictions do not arise. For example, beginning from the eighth ground, that is called "great Paramita," which is spoken as the answer to the third question. This sutra text is also divided into three parts, and should be understood as above. Thus, from the eighth ground onwards, because one has become very empowered by fully cultivating and so forth in the third immeasurable kalpas, and because one is always engaged in yoga, all afflictions do not arise. From the eighth ground onwards, one effortlessly engages in each practice, cultivating each one, and so forth.

Because it arises exceedingly, it is called "Great." Even in the treatise *Establishment of Consciousness-Only*, it shows agreement in meaning with what is stated in this sutra. Therefore, in that very text, these ten stages of causes have three names: The first is called "Gone to the Other Shore," which is like this: In the first countless eon, at that time, because the power of generosity and so forth is weak, it is overwhelmed by afflictions, and because it is unable to overcome them, it does not belong to the universal arising of afflictions. The second is called "Near Gone to the Other Shore," which is like this: In the second countless eon, at that time, the power of generosity and so forth gradually increases, so it is not overcome by afflictions. Because it is able to overcome them, it especially engages in counteracting afflictions. The third is called "Gone to the Other Shore," which is like this: In the third countless eon, at that time, the power of generosity and so forth greatly increases, so it is able to completely overcome all afflictions, and therefore all afflictions do not universally arise at all. However, because it possesses the seeds of the universal arising of subtle knowable objects and the seeds of near afflictions, it is not ultimately perfect. In the *Yoga Practice Ground Treatise*, it is said to be small, medium, and large. Therefore, in that very text, it says: The accumulation of merit and wisdom of a Bodhisattva, in the first great countless eon, should be known as small; in the second great countless eon, it is called medium; in the third great countless eon, it should be known as large. This is also stated in the *Sutra Teaching Excellent Discipline* and the *Treatise Holding the Earth*. In the *Sutra of Separating Boundaries*, what is said is also in accordance with what is stated in this sutra. In the *Profound Meaning Liberation Sutra*, it is slightly different from this sutra. Thus, in the sutra section, "Gone to the Other Shore" and "Near Gone to the Other Shore" are associated with the stages before the ground, while "Great Gone to the Other Shore" is associated with the first ground and above, up to the tenth ground and below.
