In the commentary of the scriptures, it is said: Although some sentient beings do not have karmic obscurations, Bodhisattvas often see them generating virtuous Dharma. If they were to give them possessions, considering that enjoying the pleasure of possessions would hinder the arising of virtuous Dharma, they would think: It is best for these people to increase virtuous Dharma while being poor. If these people were to have possessions and be hindered from generating virtue, that would not be good. Therefore, based on this reasoning, they do not give possessions. Furthermore, that scripture also says that because they see those sentient beings showing universal renunciation when they are poor, this is the third reason. In the commentary by Master Asanga, it says: Thus, when Bodhisattvas see those sentient beings becoming a collection of wealth, they will develop a great sense of renunciation towards samsara and will definitely seek liberation. If they were to obtain possessions, they would become arrogant, so they do not give away material things. They would think: It is better for those people to be poor and constantly show a sense of renunciation from samsara. If they were to obtain possessions, enjoy happiness, and become careless, and no longer generate renunciation from samsara, thereby creating sinful and unwholesome Dharma, that would not be good. The commentary by Master Vasubandhu also states this. Furthermore, in that same scripture, it is said that because they see that giving possessions to those sentient beings would become the cause of unwholesome Dharma, etc., this is the fourth reason. In the commentary by Master Asanga, it says: Thus, if Bodhisattvas were to give those sentient beings abundant possessions, they would become careless and would create all kinds of sinful and unwholesome actions. Therefore, they do not give possessions. As the verse says: It is better to abandon the practice of evil destinies, When one is impoverished by possessions. It is not right for them to become vessels of future suffering, When those senses are distracted by wealth.

It appears like that. It is also said so in the commentary written by Master Vasubandhu. Furthermore, in that very treatise, it is said that if enjoyments are given to those sentient beings, it is because it is seen that it will cause harm to a great many other sentient beings. This is the fifth reason. In the commentary by Master Asanga: Thus, Bodhisattvas, seeing that those sentient beings will harm many sentient beings if they obtain enjoyments, do not give them possessions of enjoyments. They think, 'It is better for this one alone to experience the suffering of poverty. It is not right if it harms a great many other sentient beings.' It is said so. It is also said so in the commentary written by Master Vasubandhu. Furthermore, in that treatise, it is said that therefore, sentient beings appear to be destitute. Here is a verse: Seeing and karmic obscurations manifest, etc., Because of seeing harmful things, Bodhisattvas, It is said that sentient beings do not obtain enjoyments. It is said. This is the general conclusion made by Master Asanga. In the commentary written by Master Vasubandhu: In order to show those meanings again, the verse is shown again, because it is seen that those sentient beings have karmic obscurations, because it obstructs the arising of virtue, because universal sorrow has manifested, because of sins, etc., because it harms others, the Bodhisattva's giving of enjoyments will not be obtained, therefore, sentient beings appear destitute. The commentary on Lankavatara, which shows the types of causes, is not mentioned here because the meanings are mostly the same. Similarly, the Bodhisattvas' giving of wealth and jewels is like the ocean, so there is no fault. That is because of the fault of the sentient beings' own karma, like pretas, they have no result due to the power of their own karma. This is called the combination of the third metaphor and meaning. That is the sutra itself.

It is just a particle. In the commentary on the Arya Prajñāpāramitā, there are two types of pretas: those who subdue and those who are hungry. The pretas who subdue are like gods, enjoying happiness and living with the hungry pretas, acting as their masters. The stomach of a hungry preta is as large as Mount Meru, and their throat is as small as the eye of a needle. Their skin, veins, and bones are all pus. Even after eight thousand countless years, they do not even hear the names of food and drink, let alone see them. Some pretas have flames burning from their mouths and eat moths that have been scorched by fire. Some pretas eat and drink feces, saliva, snot, and pus and blood. Some pretas eat various impure things along with offerings. The Yogācāra treatises state that, in short, there are two types of pretas: those who have external obstructions to food and drink, those who have internal obstructions to food and drink, and those who have no obstructions to food and drink. What are the external obstructions to food and drink? For example, certain beings who, due to extreme miserliness, are born as pretas, are hungry and thirsty, their skin, flesh, and blood all dried up, resembling unburnt stumps. Their faces are covered with hair, their expressions distorted by hunger and thirst, and their mouths are extremely dry with tongues hanging out. They wander everywhere near springs, lakes, and ponds. However, in those places, beings holding swords, spears, or other weapons prevent them from approaching the springs, lakes, and ponds. Even if they can get close, the water looks like pus and blood, and they themselves do not want to drink it. Such pretas are called pretas with external obstructions to food and drink. What are the internal obstructions to food and drink? For example, pretas with mouths like needle holes, flames burning in their mouths, those with goiters, and those with large bellies. Even if they are not obstructed by others and have found food and drink themselves, they cannot consume it.
