Such ones are called pretas who have inner obstructions to food and drink. What are those without obstructions to food and drink? For example, there are pretas called "flame garland pretas," and everything they eat and drink burns. Therefore, their suffering of hunger and thirst never ceases. There are also pretas who eat filth. Some of them eat feces and drink urine. Whatever is unclean, smells foul, is harmful, and should be condemned, they are able to eat or drink. Some even cut off their own flesh to eat. Whatever is clean or virtuous, they cannot eat or drink. Such ones are called pretas who have no obstructions to food and drink. Furthermore, the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara said to the Bhagavan: "Bhagavan, how does a Bodhisattva hold the non-essence of all dharmas through the perfections?" From here onwards is the seventeenth chapter, which shows the gate of completely holding the non-essence of dharmas through the Perfection of Wisdom. This is shown in five ways: asking, answering, asking if, proving feasibility, and concluding. This is the first, the Bodhisattva asking: "Out of these six perfections, which perfection holds the non-essence of all dharmas?" This is the summary question. The Bhagavan said to the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara: "Son of good family, thus the Perfection of Wisdom holds the non-essence of all dharmas." This is the second, the Tathagata answering correctly. Among the six perfections, the Perfection of Wisdom is the essence of the Perfection of Wisdom. How does it hold the non-essence of all dharmas? The non-essence spoken of here is thus the non-essence. Or, there are three kinds of non-essence. Bhagavan, if through the Perfection of Wisdom

If, by the perfection, one holds the non-existence of the essence of all dharmas, then why does one not hold that which possesses essence? This is the third question of the Bodhisattva. That is, if one also holds the non-existence of essence, then it becomes clinging. If one should also hold clinging, then why does one not hold that which possesses non-essence? It will be explained thus. In another way of explanation, if, by the Perfection of Wisdom, one also holds the non-existence of the essence of all dharmas, then it is reasonable that one should also hold that which possesses essence. Because, in one aspect of suchness, the meaning of possessing essence and not possessing essence are fully present. Or, if in the three forms of non-essence, there also exists the meaning of non-essence and possessing essence, then why does one not hold the meaning of possessing essence? This is the summary of the question. Son of good family, I never say that I hold non-essence by non-essence, this is the fourth, the Tathagata shows the reason for being acceptable. This also has three aspects: the explanation in the manner of refutation, the explanation in the manner of agreement, and the answer to the objection. This is the answer to the opponent's refutation by the explanation in the manner of refutation. This also has two explanations: Some say, I never cling to non-essence, because I do not say that I hold non-essence, so I do not say that I hold that which possesses essence. Others say, I never say that I hold non-essence, because non-essence is separated from names and words, therefore one should not say that one holds that which possesses essence. However, if it is said that non-essence is separated from letters, then by the inner self-awareness, the second explanation in the manner of agreement is because non-essence is separated from words, therefore

If one holds onto having own-being, then it is shown as the inner, individual self-awareness. This is as stated above in the sutra itself, "I have said that ultimate reality is inexpressible, and conceptualization and analysis operate within the realm of expression." Furthermore, it is said that ultimate reality is the inner, individual self-awareness of the noble ones, and the realm of conceptualization and analysis is what ordinary beings mutually recognize. Moreover, in the treatise *Yogācārabhūmi*, it says: Furthermore, that bodhisattva, having long engaged in the wisdom of the selflessness of phenomena, realizes the inexpressible nature of all phenomena as it truly is, and apart from grasping things as merely suchness, he does not conceptually discriminate any phenomenon in any way. However, he does not even think, 'This is merely a thing, this is merely suchness,' but rather engages in meaning. The statement "Because it cannot be shown even by abandoning speech and letters" is the third statement showing the opponent's response. Some say this: If that is so, why was it shown above that the Perfection of Wisdom holds onto the very absence of own-being? Therefore, here it is said, "Because it cannot be shown even by abandoning speech," and this question and answer should be understood as stated in the treatise *Yogācārabhūmi*. Therefore, it says in that very text: If all phenomena are of an inexpressible nature, why engage in expression? It is said: Although there is no expression, that inexpressible nature of reality cannot be declared or heard by others, and without words and hearing, that inexpressible nature cannot be known. Therefore, expression is also engaged in for the sake of hearing and knowing. Furthermore, in that very text, it says that all phenomena are also of an inexpressible nature, are the cessation of elaboration, and are of a nature that transcends the realm of words, and therefore, they are to be grasped, viewed, and realized by relying on expression, because it is so.
