I hold to arising as the very gate of entering into cyclic existence. The later kind of complete bewilderment holds to cessation and the path as the very gate of the nature of purification. Of the ten obscurations, this is the sixth, the obscuration of coarse characteristics that occur everywhere. One aspect of that which is co-emergent holds to the characteristics of complete defilement and complete purification as being existent. Therefore, it obstructs the path of complete defilement and non-purification of the sixth ground. Upon entering the sixth ground, it is abandoned initially. On the seventh ground, there are two kinds of complete bewilderment: complete bewilderment with subtle characteristics occurring everywhere, and complete bewilderment with the means of focusing on the absence of characteristics as one thing. The so-called "its place of unfavorable contrary aspects" indicates the obscuration of the ground of the seventh ground that has been prolonged. In the Treatise on the Establishment of Mere Awareness, the so-called "complete bewilderment with subtle characteristics occurring everywhere" is that here there is an adherence to the existent producer, because there is an adherence to the characteristic of subtle engagement as being production. It is explained that in this way, there is an adherence to the engagement of arising and ceasing from various conditions. Although in the true sense, cessation is included, for the time being only arising is mentioned. Furthermore, in that very text, the so-called "complete bewilderment of striving for one thing without characteristics" is that here there is an adherence to the existent destroyer, because there is an adherence to the subtle characteristic that is contrary to the system. It appears that how one adheres to the characteristic contrary to the system in dependent arising, although one cannot approach the one-pointed mind that is without characteristics, one greatly increases the practice of emptiness. Of the ten obscurations, this is the seventh, the obscuration of subtle characteristics that occur everywhere. Thus, because from the obscuration of knowledge, one aspect of that which is co-emergent adheres to the subtle characteristics of arising and ceasing that occur everywhere as being existent. Therefore, it obstructs the path of the seventh ground that is distinguished by the absence of characteristics, and upon entering the seventh ground, it is completely abandoned. On the eighth ground, there are two kinds of complete bewilderment: exertion in the absence of characteristics.

Always being ignorant, and always being ignorant of being in control of characteristics, and its unfavorable conditions of unfavorable places, this is called the eighth immovable ground's obscuration being shown. In the treatise 'Establishment of Consciousness Only,' always being ignorant of striving for the absence of characteristics, and also being ignorant of being in control of characteristics, also here, because of not being in control of characteristics, and also because this also gathers the aspects of fields and characteristics into one, and also because from the eighth ground onwards, the uncontaminated path arises naturally, and also because all the afflictions of the three realms do not arise, the subtle obscuration of knowledge of the afflicted mind always arises, because it is not incompatible with the fruit of the wisdom born of emptiness. Among them, the so-called fruit of the wisdom born of emptiness is like this: the subsequent attainment knowledge and the cessation attainment that are manifestly accomplished by the knowledge born of emptiness. Among the ten obscurations, this is the eighth obscuration of striving for the absence of characteristics. Thus, from the obscuration of knowledge, the one aspect of co-emergent non-characteristic meditation will not naturally enter. In the previous five grounds, meditation with characteristics is much, and meditation without characteristics is little. In the sixth ground, meditation with characteristics is little, and meditation without characteristics is much. The seventh ground is solely meditating without characteristics constantly and continuously, but it is still with effort, because of striving for the absence of characteristics, it cannot naturally be with characteristics and empty. That obscuration with effort, also because there is no path of effort on the eighth ground, so when entering the eighth ground, it is completely abandoned, because of abandoning it, two kinds of mastery will also be obtained. On the ninth ground, there are two kinds of always being ignorant, namely, always being ignorant of the power of infinite Dharma teachings and infinite Dharma words and letters, and of the power of wisdom and eloquence dharani that are more and more superior, and always being ignorant of being in control of eloquence, and its unfavorable conditions of unfavorable places, this is called the ninth ground of good intelligence.
