Not approaching harm, therefore benefiting sentient beings. With patience, one does not mind harm, deprivation, and various injuries, and endures them, thus benefiting sentient beings. Such examples show that the fourth is explained and shown by sequentially distinguishing them. This also has two aspects: first, showing the three that benefit, and second, showing the three that become antidotes. This is the first, showing the three that benefit sentient beings. In the Sutra Unraveling the Profound Meaning and others, it is said that the first three perfections should be combined with the three types of benefiting in order: benefiting by accomplishing with resources, benefiting by not harming, and benefiting by not having a retaliatory mind towards those who harm. In the Treatise on the Establishment of Consciousness Only, Furthermore, the first three are those that benefit sentient beings, because one gives them resources and does not harm them, and because one endures the harm they do and benefits them. More extensively, it should be understood as explained in the Treatise Compendium of Abhidharma and others. The latter three, which become antidotes to afflictions, are as follows: Bodhisattvas, with diligence, do not completely cut off all afflictions, nor do they completely subdue all latent predispositions, but with earnestness, they cultivate virtuous qualities, so those afflictions cannot generate actions that correspond to virtuous qualities. With meditation, one subdues afflictions. With wisdom, one permanently destroys latent predispositions. Thus, the second is showing the latter three becoming antidotes. In this way, although diligence does not completely cut off all manifest afflictions like meditation, nor does it permanently destroy all seed-like latent predispositions like wisdom, nevertheless, by diligently cultivating virtuous qualities, afflictions do not arise, and one corresponds with virtuous qualities. Whatever corresponds with virtuous qualities is diligence, because it is called correspondence since it becomes the means of meditation and wisdom.

Thus it is said. Samadhi pacifies all aspects of affliction, while wisdom permanently destroys the seeds of affliction. The latter three are the antidotes to affliction, as it is said. In the Treatise on Mere Consciousness, it is also said that the three, such as diligence, are the antidotes to affliction. Even if they are not completely pacified, they can be diligently applied to virtuous dharmas, and by cultivating the antidotes, they can pacify and approach affliction. Broadly speaking, it is as taught in treatises such as the Abhidharma-samuccaya. These six perfections are also shown as five types by six kinds of reasoning. In some treatises, they are also shown as six types by one meaning. As it is said in the Sutra Showing the Upasaka Vows: In order to completely eliminate the six wrong views of the heretics, the six perfections are taught. The Blessed One said: The east is like generosity, because it appears first. The south is like discipline, because it is similar to the right side. The west is like patience, because patience with faults arises after that. The north is like diligence, because the name is most excellent. The lower direction is like meditation, because it distinguishes the evil destinies. The upper direction is like wisdom, because it is the unsurpassed nature of non-arising. Furthermore, as it is said in the commentary on the Noble Perfection of Wisdom: Why did the Tathagata only teach six perfections, neither more nor less? Answer: The Buddha, as the king of Dharma, sometimes teaches one, two, three, etc. in the sutras, according to the faculties of sentient beings. Sometimes he also teaches extensively, as it is said in the Bhadrakalpa Sutra: There are eighty-four thousand perfections. Furthermore, sentient beings of the six realms, suffering from the torment of body and mind, bodhisattvas generate great compassion,

It is said that the six perfections are generated in order to thoroughly pacify the suffering of sentient beings in the six realms, therefore they are neither too many nor too few. Furthermore, in the treatise "Yogacarabhumi-sastra," it is stated that only six are taught in order to summarize these three trainings. The first four summarize higher discipline, the one after that summarizes higher mind, and the last one summarizes higher wisdom. Therefore, only six paramitas are established, just as it is said that they are neither too many nor too few. Some say that the reason for not being too many or too few is explained by two reasons, as in this sutra itself, the "Vimuktimargga-sutra," the "Sandhinirmocana-sutra," and the translation of the commentary on the "Mahayanasamgraha" during the time of Lanka. Some say that the reason for not being too many or too few is explained by three reasons, as in the treatise "Mahayanasamgraha": "Why are there only six perfections?" Because it is for counteracting unfavorable factors, for establishing remedies, for becoming the abode of the Buddhas, for fully ripening all sentient beings, and for being in accordance. As it is extensively explained therein. Furthermore, in the treatise "Abhidharmasamuccaya," it is said that there are two kinds of numbers: counting numbers and definite numbers. Counting numbers are like this: the six perfections. Definite numbers are like this: the number of perfections is only six, therefore they are neither too many nor too few. Why is that? Because the path of the Bodhisattvas, in short, is of two kinds. The first is the path of higher realms, which is the first three perfections. The second is the path of definite goodness, which is the last three perfections. As it is explained in detail therein, this is the first reason. Furthermore, it is also said there that the perfections are the means to non-abiding nirvana, therefore its number is only six. Why is that? Because for the sake of the first three perfections.
