It is said that it is for the purpose of showing liberation, and for the purpose of showing the means of liberation, and for the purpose of showing the individual self-awareness within that liberation. It is extensively taught as taught in that very text. By the meaning of the uncommon Dharani, Bodhisattvas will attain the ability to enter into the hidden meanings of the profound Dharma spoken by the Tathagata. This is to show the intention of requesting the second explanation. Here, due to the concise explanation, one will enter into the hidden meanings of the profound Dharma spoken by the Tathagata, such as non-action. The Blessed One said to the Bodhisattva Manjushri: "Son of good family, listen well. I will explain to you in brief the meaning of the uncommon Dharani." This below is the explanation. The second is the true answer spoken by the Tathagata. This also has two aspects: showing the appearance of encouraging listening and explaining the Dharma, and from "Son of good family" onwards, truly explaining as requested. The first also has two aspects: showing permission to explain, and showing the benefits of the explanation. This is the first. Bodhisattvas will enter well into the hidden meanings I have explained. This is the second, showing the benefits of the explanation. "Son of good family, whatever is the Dharma of all afflictions, and whatever is the Dharma of purification, I have shown that all of them are without action and without any person, because in all aspects they are free from action. The Dharma of all afflictions also turns into all afflictions, but it does not later turn into purification. The Dharma of purification also later turns into purification,

It also specifically points out the object to be indicated, and the benefits included from "anything" onwards. This first points out the correct meaning. There are two explanations for this sutra passage. Some say that from "What is a completely afflicted dharma" to "There is no person at all," it refers to the meaning of emptiness of sentient beings. For example, the Blessed One pointed out that for all completely afflicted and purified dharmas, I have no separate, distinct actions. Just as seeing forms and so on, for a person, there is no self at all. Or, "no action" is like the treatise of 'Supreme Speech,' which negates the independent existence apart from the Dharma. Such a meaning is the meaning of the emptiness of sentient beings. Among them, "because of being separated from all actions" and so on refers to the meaning of emptiness of dharmas. For example, all dharmas are separated from the actions of the grasper, the grasped, and various elaborations, so even completely afflicted dharmas were previously completely afflicted, but later will not become completely purified. Completely purified dharmas are later completely purified, but were not previously completely afflicted. Why is that? Because the afflicted and purified dharmas that are completely imputed are present following the mind, but do not exist in ultimate reality, therefore there are statements such as previously being completely afflicted and later becoming completely purified. If the word "imputed nature" is not indicated in this sutra passage, how can it be known that it is only the imputed nature? It is said that if it is combined with the previously indicated general characteristic of emptiness, then it is only imputation, not two natures. Therefore, it can be known from this sutra that what is said is the imputed nature. Or, because of being separated from all actions, the previously indicated completely afflicted and purified dharmas are also separated from the actions of elaboration such as grasping at self and what belongs to self. Some say that all that

What are the defiled dharmas, and what are the purified dharmas? The terms "defiled" and "purified dharmas" refer to a general description of all defiled and purified dharmas. The statement "I have shown all actions" means that the absence of self in phenomena has been thoroughly revealed. The statement "showing that there is no person whatsoever" means showing the absence of self in persons. The phrase "because of being free from acting in all ways" and so forth, simultaneously reveals the two aspects of selflessness. Thus, because defiled and purified dharmas are free from the actions of grasping and being grasped, there is no transformation from being previously defiled to becoming purified later. Therefore, in the "Madhyāntavibhāga-bhāṣya" (Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes), it is said that since neither sentient beings nor phenomena exist, neither the nature of defilement nor purification exists. Thus, both the meaning of defilement and purification are without any object of focus. Among these, defilement refers to suffering and its origin. Purification refers to cessation and the path. Alternatively, defilement is the imputed and the dependent nature on the side of defilement. Purification is the dependent nature on the side of purification and the perfectly established nature. Alternatively, defilement is the three types of defilement: defilement of afflictions, actions, and birth. Purification is the two types of purification: mundane and supramundane. Ordinary beings, due to the habit of clinging to the distinctions of the nature of phenomena and persons on the body of bad rebirth, caused by the object of false views, because of clinging to self or what belongs to self, thus seeing with wrong attention, "I see, I hear, I hold, I touch, I know, I eat, I do, I am defiled, I am purified," and so forth, such wrong actions arise, which is called the fault of clinging due to the second ignorance. Among these, the term "ordinary beings" refers to the ignorant.
