as well as faults, etc. Some say that these four are mostly in agreement with what was said before, but there are also differences. The fourth definition does not include what is called "one part of both sides is included." From the fourth definition, the definition of approximating proof with examples of other kinds is precisely what is called "one part of both sides is included," and the others are as previously stated. Some say that these four are similar to the previous statement, but there is a difference: the definition of approximating proof with other kinds is understood in the third and fourth, and the others are as before. Although there are these three kinds of statements, if combined with the explanation of the treatises and the two kinds of examples from the sutras, then from the definition of approximating proof with examples of other kinds, in the third and fourth, there is generally no word called "example of other kinds." In the *Yogācārabhūmi* and the *Explanation*, the arrangement of names is the same, but the explanation is slightly different. Therefore, in the *Yogācārabhūmi* it says: All dharmas, whether it is a mark, nature, function, dharma, cause, result, etc., any characteristic of similarity or dissimilarity, mutually similar, any dissimilar characteristic, similar or dissimilar to others, is called the characteristic of being perceived as different. Whatever characteristics are absolutely different from each other are called characteristics of being perceived as completely different. The explanation of the treatise also shows it that way. The other definitions are consistent with what is said in this sutra. If combined with this explanation, then the five, such as marks and nature, can also be understood as similar and dissimilar characteristics, and as single and different characteristics. Among them, the reasoning of the nature of dharma is as follows: Whether the five Tathāgatas appear in the world or not, the existence of the nature of dharma and the existence of the realm of dharma, that is called the reasoning of the nature of dharma. This is the fourth reasoning of the nature of dharma, explained separately.

Oṃ. The treatise *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra* begins with the meaning of dependent origination and explains the meaning of the three terms of the sūtra: the nature of phenomena exists, phenomena exist, and the realm of phenomena. Therefore, in that very treatise, the Blessed One said, "Dependent origination is not made by me, nor is it made by others. Whether the Tathāgatas appear in the world or do not appear in the world, the nature of phenomena, phenomena exist, and the realm of phenomena, this is indeed existent." Then, what is the nature of phenomena? What is the existence of phenomena? What is the realm of phenomena? That which has been spoken of since beginningless time is called the nature of phenomena. How is it spoken of? The establishment of rational words and letters is called the existence of phenomena. The cause of existence is the nature of phenomena, therefore it is called the realm." Furthermore, in the *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra*, the reasoning of the nature of phenomena in the Śrāvakabhūmi and so on is as follows: Why do the aggregates become like that? Why does the world remain like that? Why is the characteristic of earth solidity? The characteristic of water is liquidity? The characteristic of fire is heat? The characteristic of wind is motion? Why are the aggregates impermanent? Why is nirvāṇa peaceful? Similarly, why is the characteristic of form susceptibility to form? The characteristic of feeling is experience? The characteristic of perception is comprehensive knowledge? The characteristic of formations is manifest formation? The characteristic of consciousness is to make conscious? That is the nature of phenomena, because that is the nature of those phenomena, and it is like their very essence, therefore the nature of phenomena is the only one, and that itself is called reasoning here. Furthermore, from the *Abhidharmasamuccaya*, how many kinds of reasoning are used to analyze phenomena when striving for the Dharma and analyzing phenomena? It is said: It is analyzed by four kinds of reasoning, namely: the reasoning of dependence, the reasoning of function, the reasoning of proof, and the reasoning of the nature of phenomena. Among these, the reasoning of dependence
