Sweep away the dust, use a duster to dust, remove unclean things, hang silk banners, fumigate with incense, and scatter flowers. Adorn with various decorations, and then I will come. If it is not like this, I will not be able to come to your house, it is like saying this. Therefore, Bodhisattvas adorn themselves. This is what is said in the scriptures. In the commentary on the "Noble Mañjuśrī-nāma-saṃgīti," it is mostly said to be in accordance with what is said in the "Great Detailed Explanation." Furthermore, in the commentary on the "Noble Mañjuśrī-nāma-saṃgīti," the meaning of the names is revealed. Therefore, in that commentary it says, "The Buddhas of the ten directions and the Dharma of the three times do not have marks, why are the thirty-two marks shown? Even one mark does not truly exist, what need is there to mention thirty-two?" It is said, "There are two truths in the Buddha's Dharma, the conventional truth and the ultimate truth. For the sake of the conventional truth, the thirty-two marks are shown. For the sake of the ultimate truth, the absence of marks is shown. Furthermore, there are two paths, the path of beings increasing merit and the path of beings cultivating wisdom. For the sake of the path of merit, the thirty-two marks are shown. For the sake of the path of wisdom, the absence of marks is shown. For the sake of the body of birth, the thirty-two marks are shown. For the sake of the Dharma body, the absence of marks is shown. Thus, the body of birth is adorned with the thirty-two marks and excellent signs, while the Dharma body is adorned with the ten powers, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, and the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, and so on. Beings have two kinds of causes and conditions, the causes and conditions of merit and the causes and conditions of wisdom. In order to lead beings who have the causes and conditions of merit, the body with the thirty-two marks is manifested. In order to lead beings who have the causes and conditions of wisdom, the Dharma body is manifested. Beings...

There are two aspects: merely nominal designation for phenomena, and attachment to names. For sentient beings attached to names, the absence of characteristics is taught. For sentient beings who understand phenomena as merely nominal designations, the thirty-two marks are taught. Furthermore, in order to thoroughly show that they are superior to all sentient beings, the thirty-two marks are taught, and it is said, "The dharma without characteristics will not be destroyed." The extensive explanation of the thirty-two marks should be understood as it appears in the teachings on the characteristics. Having the ten powers, cutting off all the doubts of all sentient beings, this is called the third, the teaching on the characteristics of having the ten powers. Possessing the four fearlessnesses and correctly teaching the Dharma, being unassailable by all opponents, and subduing all false speech, this is called the teaching on the fundamental characteristics. In this very sutra, the forty-six qualities of the Thus-Gone One are taught in brief. In the Treatise on the Grounds of Yoga Practice, one hundred and forty qualities of the Thus-Gone One are taught. In the Sutra of the Unsurpassed Abode, one hundred and eighty qualities are taught. It should be understood as it appears in the detailed teachings on the characteristics. In the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, the Noble Eightfold Path and the four Samana fruits are manifest, this is called the fifth, the teaching on the characteristics of the manifestation of the path and the fruit. Thus, since the Thus-Gone One appeared in the world and the Dharma was well-spoken, the Noble Eightfold Path, the four fruits of the asceticism realized by it, and the twenty-seven noble ones, etc., various fruits become manifest. If the Buddha had not appeared, all of this would not be manifest. Therefore, in the commentary on the Perfection of Wisdom, it is said: Although a person possesses merit and wisdom, if the Buddha does not appear in the world, they will not experience the ripening of karma, nor will they attain the path. But if the Buddha appears in the world, then initially the path will be attained. For example, although a person has eyes, if the sun does not rise, nothing will be seen; only after the sun rises will things be seen.
