That which is called "This is perceived by direct perception in the world" is a classification of the measure of valid cognition. That is, in the world, what is merely nominally established as direct perception is not direct perception, but only direct perception. Because it is direct perception, it is called direct perception. For example, relying on this coarse impermanence, one can infer subtle impermanence and so on. Therefore, abiding in direct perception, it is called the characteristic of the object of perception. What is the nature of that thing? In this regard, first, relying on the coarse meaning of impermanence in one lifetime, seeing impermanence itself directly is called the direct perception of impermanence. Because one sees the experience of various harms to one's own body, it becomes a measure of suffering that appears directly. Those who revile and seek faults, because they have no autonomy, understand selflessness, and these are called the direct perception of selflessness. These are discriminations made by the wisdom of hearing and thinking, and by a mind distracted, therefore they are not direct perception. This is called worldly direct perception. Another way of saying it is that "All conditioned phenomena are impermanent" refers to the general collection of all conditioned things. "All conditioned phenomena are suffering" refers to all conditioned phenomena with defilements. "All phenomena are selfless" refers to the collection of all phenomena. These are called the three Dharma seals. Therefore, in the *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra*, the definitive meaning is "All conditioned phenomena are impermanent." "All that is with defilements is suffering." "The emptiness and selflessness of all phenomena." The reasoning of impermanence and so on also has two meanings: the first is the reasoning of impermanence and so on of one's own characteristics, that is, the objects of direct perception each have their own characteristics. The second is the common characteristic, for example, like stringing flowers with a thread, one impermanence pervades the aggregates and so on, and suffering and selflessness are the same. Here, direct perception is...

Since "worldly" is a name established based on the external common characteristics, it is merely a nominal "worldly direct perception," and not a true direct perception प्रमाण. In the Yogacarabhumi Shastra, relying on the true direct perception प्रमाण, it is called "worldly direct perception." Therefore, in that very treatise, it says: "Whose direct perception प्रमाण should be said to be direct perception प्रमाण?" The answer is: "In summary, there are four types: sense-object direct perception प्रमाण, mind-experienced direct perception प्रमाण, worldly direct perception प्रमाण, and pure direct perception प्रमाण. Sense-object direct perception प्रमाण is like this: according to the characteristics of direct perception प्रमाण as shown, whatever is the object of the five sense-objects. Mind-experienced direct perception प्रमाण is like this: whatever is the object of the mind. Worldly direct perception प्रमाण is like this: combining the previous two into one is called worldly direct perception प्रमाण. True direct perception प्रमाण is like this: whatever is worldly direct perception प्रमाण is also pure direct perception प्रमाण. There is also pure direct perception प्रमाण that is not worldly direct perception प्रमाण, which is whatever is the object beyond the world. For existing things, it is known as existing; for non-existing things, it is known as non-existing; for superior things, it is known as superior; for non-superior things, it is known as non-superior. And this, which is not common with worldly people, is called pure direct perception प्रमाण." That is what it says. In the commentary, it is also stated as such. Combining what is stated in the Yogacarabhumi Shastra, it is also called "worldly" because it is not without outflows. It is also stated as "worldly" because it is not direct perception प्रमाण. If that is the case, then what constitutes the nature of direct perception प्रमाण? Master Xuanzang said: "All of the sixth consciousness is not direct perception प्रमाण, and the five consciousnesses in a distracted state, as well as the simultaneous consciousness, are also not direct perception प्रमाण. All meditative minds are included in direct perception प्रमाण." That is what he said. Master Jina also said in his Compendium of Valid Cognition: Equanimity
