It acts. Whatever form is transformed by the four great elements as its cause is called accomplishment. When phenomena arise, they each perform their respective functions. For example, when the eye sees form, up to the mind grasping phenomena. Some say that by practicing virtue, one attains nirvana, and the complete perfection of qualities is accomplishment. Seeing and hearing, etc., are called actions. Therefore, in the Hearer's Ground, it says: "Whatever aggregates are produced by their own causes and their own conditions are connected to their respective actions. For example, the eye sees forms, the ear hears sounds, and the mind knows phenomena. Form abides in the realm of the eye, sound abides in the realm of the ear, and similarly, phenomena abide in the realm of the mind. Furthermore, whatever phenomena are similar to this, the reason why they act upon each other, and whatever becomes a combination and means, is called the reason of action." The reason for establishing validity is as follows: Whatever causes and conditions establish the pledge, explanation, and meaning of what is said, and whatever becomes a correct understanding, is called the reason for establishing validity. From here on is the third, the detailed explanation of the reason for establishing validity. This is also shown in two ways. This is the first sutra's words, and there are also two explanations for this. Some say that "by what causes and what conditions" refers to the reason and the example relied upon at the time of making the pledge, which are called cause and condition. "Pledge" refers to whatever elaborates on the meaning of the pledged doctrine. "Explanation" refers to stating the source of the meaning of establishment. "Establishing the meaning" refers to elaborating on the aforementioned pledge. "Making it correctly understood" refers to making it correctly understood after elaborating on the aforementioned explanation and the meaning of what was said.

That is the end of the quote. Some say that "what are the causes and what are the conditions" refers to the three kinds of valid cognition (pramana). "Thesis," "statement," and "meaning of what is said" are the same in meaning. If there is a distinction, it depends on the ability to establish the three valid cognitions, which is called "thesis." What depends on the teaching that reveals is called "statement." What depends on extensive explanation is called "what is said." After establishing what the meaning of the thesis is through causes and conditions, one asserts the impermanence of other things, thereby enabling one to truly understand. From the Hearer's (Shravaka) Pitaka, the reasoning for establishing validity is as follows: Are the aggregates impermanent? Are they dependently originated? Are they suffering? Are they empty? Are they without self? These three valid cognitions are as follows: they are realized through reliable scripture, direct perception, and inference. The reasoning for establishing validity is that these three valid cognitions, which seize the essence of the noble ones, establish the aggregates as impermanent, dependently originated, suffering, empty, and without self, and are able to establish it. This is called the reasoning for establishing validity. Furthermore, if this reasoning is briefly summarized, there are two types. From here onwards, it shows the second type of reasoning, which is valid reasoning. This also has four aspects: briefly stating the number, arranging the names according to the number, briefly explaining the definition, and extensively explaining through examination and answers. This is the first. "Completely pure" and "completely impure" is the second, arranging the names according to the stated number. In this way, because there is no fault in establishing the meaning with valid reasoning, it is called "completely pure." Because it has faults, it is called "completely impure," which will be explained extensively below. "Completely pure" is defined by five characteristics. "Completely impure" is defined by seven characteristics. This is the third, briefly explaining the definition, that is, dividing into completely pure and completely impure by the power of five characteristics and seven characteristics.
