Among the categories of what I have declared and prophesied, etc., are the teachings where the Blessed One briefly stated the meaning but did not extensively differentiate, and then the teachings that explain them again by differentiating. Explaining the definitive meaning is like this: it should be understood from the opposite of the former. Explaining the conventional truth is like this: whatever is expressed through the path of words, all of that is called conventional. Furthermore, regarding beings, concepts, and the power of expression, it is like this: whatever is a sign, name, or conceptualization, that is also conventional. Explaining the ultimate truth is like this: the teachings that explain the four noble truths, as well as suchness, thusness, the ultimate limit, and the nature of phenomena. Secret explanation is like this: mostly those are the teachings of the Hearers' Vehicle. Differentiated explanation is like this: mostly those are the teachings of the Great Vehicle's collection of scriptures. Explaining the object of answering is like this: whatever explains the four Dharma Sutras, that is, the teachings from "all conditioned things are impermanent" up to "Nirvana is peace," such explanations. Explaining the object of not answering is like this: some ask whether the world is permanent or impermanent, up to asking whether the Tathagata exists or does not exist after death. At that time, the Tathagata does not say anything and does not prophesy, but says to them, "These things are not suitable for prophecy." It should be understood that there are four reasons for not answering: first, because of selflessness, such as when some ask whether the self and the aggregates are different or not different. Second, because of leading to things that do not accord with meaning, as it says in the Sutra of the Leaves of the Shapa Tree: "I have truly realized countless dharmas,

Asking questions like "Is there a self?" or "Is there no self?" are unanswerable. If the Blessed One were to declare that there is a self, that person would either grasp that the aggregates have a self or that there is a self separate from the aggregates. If it were declared that there is no self, that person would say that even worldly conventions do not exist like a self. Fourthly, it is because of the nature of phenomena. Thus, the suchness of phenomena, with respect to phenomena, cannot be declared as one or different, because the nature of suchness, in terms of the nature of phenomena, cannot be established as the essence of one or different. Furthermore, there are four reasons why it cannot be declared: because this thing is spoken of by outsiders, because it is not in accordance with reason, because it does not accord with meaning, and because it generates the universal entanglement of argumentative speech. The way to abandon the two extremes, in brief, is sixfold: abandoning the extreme of superimposition on what is not truly existent, abandoning the extreme of denigration of what is truly existent, abandoning the extreme of clinging to permanence, abandoning the extreme of clinging to annihilation, abandoning the extreme of indulging in the pleasure of sensual indulgence, and abandoning the extreme of self-mortification. Among these, clinging to the existence of the nature of the completely imputed is called the extreme of superimposition. Grasping non-existence through dependence on others and perfect establishment is called the extreme of denigration. Furthermore, clinging to the certainty that there is a self is the extreme of superimposition on sentient beings. Clinging to the certainty that there is no self is the extreme of denigration of sentient beings, because he has denigrated that even the imputed sentient being does not exist. Clinging to the mind as truly existent is the extreme of superimposition on phenomena. Clinging to the mind as truly non-existent is the extreme of denigration of phenomena, and this should also be understood as explained in the Treatise on Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes. Regarding form, and so on

Clinging to permanence is the extreme of the heretics. Clinging to impermanence is the extreme of the Hearers. This should be understood as taught in the Discrimination of the Middle and the Extremes. Furthermore, seeing all conditioned things as impermanent is the extreme of annihilation. Seeing nirvana as permanent is the extreme of permanence. This should be understood as taught in the Sutra of the Noble Garland-Bearer. Indulging in the pleasure of the five desires is the extreme of pleasure. Practicing austerities while starving oneself is the extreme of practicing suffering. This should be understood as taught in the Treatise on the Grounds of Yoga Practice. As mentioned above, abandoning the two extremes of the three kinds of mutual dependence and practicing the Middle Way is called the practice of abandoning meaning. The so-called inconceivable practice, in short, has six kinds of inconceivable entities: the self is inconceivable, sentient beings are inconceivable, the world is inconceivable, the ripening of the karma of sentient beings is inconceivable, the object of meditation of the dhyanas is inconceivable, and the object of the Buddhas' Buddhahood is inconceivable. These should also be explained in order as taught in the Treatise on the Grounds of Yoga Practice. From that treatise, thinking about the self is like this: some people rely on the view of the perishable aggregates and think like this: Did I exist in the past? Or did I not exist? And so on. It is the same for the present and the future. Thinking about sentient beings is like this: some people rely only on the view of the perishable aggregates and think like this: Where did those sentient beings come from? Who is the creator of sentient beings? Where do sentient beings go? Where will sentient beings cease to exist? Thinking about the world is like this: some people rely on the view of the world and think like this: Is the world permanent? And so on, extensively explaining, even starting from the nature of reality.
