Thus it was said. The phrase "the perception of obstruction has ceased" means that one has completely transcended those things, and because of non-appearance, one is separated from the various and manifold aspects of the perception of obscuration, which is the cause of accumulating color. Therefore, it is said, "the perception of obstruction has ceased." The phrase "not attending to various perceptions" means that, being separated from those things, one does not attend to the various aspects of particular obstructions, such as food, drink, riding, clothing and ornaments, forests, gardens, groves, armies, mountains, etc. Even if one entrusts those perceptions of attachment to them, they do not arise in all of everything. Therefore, it is said, "not attending to various perceptions." The phrase "thinking that space is infinite" means that, having thus broken down form, obstruction, and various perceptions, one believes in the aspect of infinite space. Therefore, it is said, "thinking that space is infinite." The phrase "having cultivated and abiding in the sphere of infinite space" means that one has completely transcended proximity and is mindful of the ultimate application. Therefore, one is able to enter into the reality of the fruit of the ultimate application of the higher one. Therefore, it is said, "having cultivated and abiding in the sphere of infinite space." Until one enters into reality, one focuses only on space. Having entered into reality, one focuses on space itself and the aggregates of one's own nature other than that. At the time of proximity, one also focuses on the aggregates of the lower ground. Furthermore, having completely transcended the sphere of infinite space in all of everything, the phrase "thinking that consciousness is infinite, having closely cultivated and abiding in the sphere of infinite consciousness" means that, having completely transcended the sphere of infinite space in all of everything, the phrase "thinking that consciousness is infinite" means the consciousness by which one believes that space is infinite, the consciousness by which one believes in the aspect of the infinity of space itself.

Because one wishes to attain equanimity in the realm of infinite consciousness, one turns away from the perception of the realm of infinite space, and with a mind of infinity, one believes in that very consciousness. And because one has completely transcended the actual basis of the realm of infinite space, along with its approximation, therefore, it is said, 'In every way, he has completely transcended the realm of infinite space, thinking, "It is infinite consciousness."' The statement, 'Having cultivated the realm of infinite consciousness, he abides,' means that he has completely transcended the approximation of the realm of infinite consciousness, and by attending to it until the ultimate application, he is able to attain equanimity in the actual basis of the fruit of the ultimate application. Therefore, it is said, 'Having cultivated the realm of infinite consciousness, he abides.' Furthermore, it is said, 'In every way, he has completely transcended the realm of infinite consciousness, thinking, "There is nothing," and having cultivated the realm of nothingness, he abides.' This means that he has moved from the realm of infinite consciousness, and while seeking any object, whether form or formless, that is related to something other than consciousness, he does not find it. Because he does not find that object, he completely transcends the actual basis of the realm of infinite consciousness, along with its approximation, thinking, 'There is no other object.' And he comes to believe only in the perception of nothingness, because he has repeatedly cultivated that belief in perception. Therefore, he completely transcends the approximation of the realm of nothingness, and by attending to it until the ultimate application, he is able to attain equanimity in the actual basis of the fruit of the ultimate application. Therefore, it is said, 'In every way, he has completely transcended the realm of infinite consciousness, thinking, "There is nothing," and having cultivated the realm of nothingness, he abides.' Furthermore, regarding the statement, 'Having completely transcended the realm of nothingness in every way, he cultivates the realm of neither perception nor non-perception and abides,' the phrase 'Having completely transcended the realm of nothingness in every way' means moving from the realm of nothingness, and it is the realm of nothingness.
