I, the one who holds, is called meditative concentration because it possesses both. Regarding having two meanings, there are also two explanations that arise, but due to their abundance, they are not mentioned here. If combined with the teachings of the Mahayana, it also accords with the truthful reasoning of the treatises, therefore it is said to be in accordance with what is taught by the first method. Therefore, in the treatise "Yogacarabhumi-sastra," it says that meditative concentration means to make the mind single-pointedly focused on the object of focus, and it is called meditative concentration because it is extremely secluded and truly approaches it. Among them, the names of the distinctions are the names of the distinctions, which are called first, second, third, and fourth. Therefore, from the perspective of according with the truthful reasoning of the treatises, although there is no distinction in the common characteristics of the meditative concentrations, in order to extremely show the distinctions of the grounds, the definitions are shown in terms of numbers, therefore it is shown from what is called the first to what is called the fourth. If it is said that the four dhyanas are established by the nature of virtue, the single-pointedness of mind, and companionship, then from what nature are the first, second, third, and fourth established? The answer is: The first is established from the combination of investigation, joy, and happiness. The second, third, and fourth are established from gradually separating from the previous limbs. In this way, abandoning investigation and possessing two aspects. The second dhyana is abandoning investigation and possessing both joy and happiness, abandoning the two and being combined with happiness. The third dhyana is abandoning both investigation and joy, and only being combined with happiness. The fourth dhyana is separated from all three aspects, that is, abandoning the three of investigation, joy, and happiness in order. Therefore, it is dividing one nature of the object of focus into four types. If asked, do the meditative concentrations not have uncommon name characteristics like loving-kindness, etc.? If it is said that here the names of the distinctions are established based on the four numbers such as the first? The answer is: It is not that there are no uncommon name characteristics here, but what is missing is the one ground's

It is merely a compilation, therefore, it is said that it is based on numbers to show the different names. Vasubandhu's Abhidharmakośa also says the same thing. In addition, the verses of the Abhidharmakośa say: "The first is with investigation and joy and happiness, and later gradually abandon the previous branches." It says so. Why didn't the verses fully mention perception? The answer is: The Abhidharmakośa says: "Therefore, it also shows that it has perception, in order to enter together without hindrance. For example, like smoke and fire, it has investigation and also joy and happiness, but it is not without perception." In addition, the Mahāvibhāṣā says: "The four dhyānas are like this, from the first dhyāna to the fourth dhyāna. Some say that the dhyānas that have investigation, joy, happiness, and equanimity are the four dhyānas that are established in order." Here, if it is combined with the teachings of the Mahāyāna, it is also based on numbers to establish names, which is in accordance with the correct reasoning of the treatises, and therefore in accordance with the teachings. Therefore, the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra says: "It is mainly in accordance with the order of numbers, therefore, it is explained from the first to the fourth." Regarding its nature, the Sarvāstivāda school's treatises, as stated in the Mahāvibhāṣā, all four dhyānas are of the nature of self-originated virtue, which are the nature of the five aggregates that are unconditioned and non-indicative. In addition, the Mahāvibhāṣā says: "The nature of dhyāna is of two kinds, namely, cultivation-born and birth-born. Among them, cultivation-born is the samādhi that is gathered by that very ground. If it also gathers the companions, then it is the nature of the five aggregates. Birth-born is the nature of the other five aggregates that correspond to the ground in which it is born." This is in accordance with the Abhidharmakośa and correct reasoning.
