Although it is said, "Thinking in the mind, outside of form, the object of experience, the image appears," but in the true sense, the image and form itself are neither one nor different. Because it is not one, form and image are not similar. And because it is not different, it is said that form is seeing form itself. Some say that there is no other image apart from form, which is the same as most Sutra schools, saying that they see their own face. Like this, because of ignorance and error, thinking in the mind that I have seen the image, and thinking that outside of form, the object of experience, the image appears, but in reality there is nothing. Therefore, in the explanation of the Sutra of the Holy Buddha Mother, it says: "If the image truly exists in the center of the mirror, how can it be used as a metaphor?" Answer: Because both form and mirror exist, and it is caused by the aggregation of causes and conditions, that is why such a sign appears, therefore it can be used as a metaphor. Just as sentient beings are perversely attached, the image is completely imbued, caused by the power of complete maturation, and the mirror and face as causes and conditions, one's own consciousness transforms, appearing like the image of the face, therefore worldly people generate arrogance, thinking in their minds that I have seen the image in the mirror, but there is no other image born in the mirror, therefore the Sutra says that many images appear, but it does not say that they are born. This is what is to be expressed." If that is the case, why does the Sutra of the Holy Buddha Mother and the chapter on mind, intellect, and consciousness in this Sutra say that it is produced? The answer is that, in terms of appearance, it is said to be produced. In addition, the explanation of the Mahāyānasaṃgraha by Acarya Asaṅga says: "Also, for example, when an image appears in a mirror, etc., although one sees the form itself, one thinks in one's mind that I have seen the image elsewhere, but that image does not truly exist." Also, Acarya Vasubandhu's

In the explanation of the *Mahāyānasaṃgraha* it says: For example, although an image is not truly existent, it produces the cognition of an image in relation to the form itself. The meaning of that image is not found elsewhere. This is also the same. Thus, although there are two explanations, it is not good to separate them in the explanation, because it is in accordance with what is taught. There are also two explanations for the teaching of the absence of an image. Some say that there is no image whatsoever in the mirror, and like before, they cite treatises such as the *Mahāyānasaṃgraha* as sources, saying that the cognition of an image arises from the form itself. Some say that the appearance of the face in the mirror also has four aspects. The first is the form that arises from the ālaya-vijñāna. The second is the aspect of the cause that arises from the eye-consciousness. The third is the aspect of the cause of the mind-consciousness that arises simultaneously, and these three aspects are in the same place as the form itself. The fourth is the aspect of the cause of the mind-consciousness of conceptual thought, and this aspect exists in the mirror and the face. This is the form of the parikalpita that arises from the form included in the five dharmadhātu, according to the *Abhidharmasamuccaya*. The first five are: that which arises from aggregation, that which is manifestly possible, that which arises from correct acquisition, that which is produced by mastery, and the form of parikalpita. Therefore, the characteristics of the mirror, the form, and the image, which are different, are explained differently. Some say that the mirror is shown as an example of samādhi, the form is shown as an example of the king of the mind, and the image is shown as an example of the aspect of the cause. They say that it is because of the power of the mind that, relying on samādhi, one can focus on blue and so on. However, since the image is emanated by the mind, it is separate from the mind, and therefore it is said that one sees the mind oneself. However, the place of the aspect of seeing itself is not seen by the aspect of seeing, therefore one sees oneself.
