Then it does not plant itself. It is shown that it will contradict statements such as 'a sword does not cut itself'. In the commentary made by the teacher No Self-Nature, it says: 'How can the mind itself see the mind itself?' This shows that it is not contradictory to the power of action and self-nature. In one of the different explanations of the Great Vehicle Collection, it says: 'If there is another consciousness that acts as the object of consciousness, then the meaning of consciousness only will not be accomplished. If focusing on one's own self-nature acts as the object, it will not be accomplished, because there is no such aspect in the world.' Son of lineage, in this, no small dharma sees any small dharma, but when the mind arises in this way, those images appear very clearly, etc., the sixth Tathagata shows the general teaching. This is also of two types: showing that the object of samadhi is not separate from the mind, and distinguishing the object of the distracted mind with questions and answers. The first is also divided into three types: meaning, metaphor, and combined meaning. This is the first meaning shown. In the commentary by the teacher No Self-Nature, it says: 'No small dharma sees any small dharma.' This shows the previous answer by refutation, because there is no agent. Because all dharmas that are without an agent do not become objects of direct realization. It is said that because there is no small dharma, it clearly shows that there is no agent. That which does not see any small dharma is what shows that there is no agent. In one of the different explanations of the Great Vehicle Collection, it says: 'No dharma holds any dharma.' In the translation of the Great Vehicle Collection at the time of Lanka, it says: 'No dharma holds another dharma.' In the Explanation of the Profound Meaning Sutra, it says: 'No dharma should be distinguished.'

It is said that, although these words are different, their meanings are not inconsistent. Furthermore, no dharma can grasp any dharma, because there is no self-nature of the mind transformed from the mind of other-dependence, and there is no real power. If it is said that the mind exists outside of that, others would retort, how can there be grasping and being grasped if there is no real power? Therefore, this statement was made. Like this, when a mind like other-dependence arises, such images appear clearly, therefore that mind grasps as an object. In the "Commentary on No Self-Nature," it says, however, when that mind arises in that way, because the phenomena of dependent origination are very powerful, two images arise on one self-nature image, and when they are viewed in relation to each other, they are neither that nor separate from that. Therefore, the mind and the phenomena arising from the mind, by the power of conditions, their self-nature arises in that way by the nature of phenomena. The reason why those minds focus on objects should be understood as explained in the treatise "Only Consciousness." Therefore, from that, even if external objects do not truly exist, is not the object of inner consciousness, the mind of others, truly existent? Why say it is not one's own object? Who would say that the mind of others does not cling to the object of one's own consciousness? It is only that it has not been pointed out as the immediately conditioning cause. Like this, when consciousness arises, there is no real function, not like hands etc. directly grasping external objects, nor like the light of the sun etc. directly illuminating external objects, but like mirrors etc., appearing as external objects, thereby knowing the mind of others.

That is to say, just as one focuses on the minds of others, so too with forms and so on. The extensive differentiation through questions and answers should be understood as it appears in that very treatise. Son of good family, for example, in the very pure center of a mirror, due to the condition of form, an image is seen, but one thinks, "I see the image," and also thinks that apart from the form, an object of experience, the image, appears. This second example illustrates that the nature of the image in the mirror is also difficult to understand. Therefore, here, first the explanations of the individual schools are stated, and then after these explanations, this very phrase of the sutra will be correctly explained. In this regard, if combined with the explanations of the individual schools, then concerning the image and the form itself, whether there is connection or no connection, whether it is imputed or truly existent, there are five kinds of explanations in brief. The first is no connection and truly existent, for example, like the Sthavira school not establishing the intermediate state based on this very example, and like the Abhidharmakosha and what accords with correct reasoning, and like the Vaibhashikas from the Mahavibhasha not establishing the intermediate state. Because the image in the mirror has the meaning of being interrupted, the Sthavira school also explains it in accordance with that. The second is no connection and not truly existent, like this, phenomena appear in this way due to the power of the aggregation of causes and conditions, therefore the specific differences in the power of the nature of phenomena are extremely difficult to fathom. For example, like Acharya Vasubandhu establishing the intermediate state, as extensively explained in the Abhidharmakosha. The third is having connection and truly existent, for example, like Acharya Deva establishing the intermediate state, like destroying the treatises of Acharya Vasubandhu, the details should be understood as explained in the treatise that accords with correct reasoning. The fourth is having connection and not truly existent, although this phrase exists in the individual schools, it cannot be taken as प्रमाण.
