Furthermore, the words in the sutra, such as "where one continuously focuses the mind on the inner consciousness," indicate that this is its practice, and this becomes the true meaning. Bodhisattva Maitreya then asked the Blessed One (Shakyamuni Buddha), "Blessed One, are the paths of Śamatha and Vipaśyanā different, or are they not different?" Starting from this sentence, the fifth part elucidates the gateway of whether the two paths of Śamatha and Vipaśyanā are one or different. This can be divided into two aspects: the question and the answer. This is the first part, the question, that Śamatha and Vipaśyanā are the places where yogis should proceed, and they are also called paths because they lead the Dharma of the Noble Ones' path. Are these two paths one, or are they different? This is the concluding statement. The Blessed One said to Bodhisattva Maitreya, "Son of good family, it should be said that they are neither different nor not different." And so on, which indicates that the second part is the Tathagata's correct answer to the question. This can also be divided into two aspects: briefly explaining the question, and explaining in detail through questions and answers. This is the first part. Why is it said that they are not different? Because the object of Vipaśyanā is the mind. Why is it said that they are also not not different? Because the image of discrimination is not what is to be observed. This is the second part, explaining in detail through questions and answers. There are also two explanations for this sutra passage. Some say that "not different" refers to the explanation based on two images. For example, when Śamatha and Vipaśyanā operate simultaneously, they are the same in the reasons and ways of the objects of hearing and thinking, and they focus on the realm of images in the manner of seeing, because the images themselves are the same, so it is said that they are not different. And "also not not different" is said from the analogy of the image. In this way, when the objects of Śamatha and Vipaśyanā are the same, the image

Those image manifestations are different from each other. Because there is a distinction between images with conceptualization and without conceptualization, they are called neither different nor not different. Some say that what is called non-different is like this: the object of calm abiding's insight does not focus on the object of the reason of hearing and thinking, but it does focus on the aspect of the mind of view that exists in the object of the two kinds of wisdom of hearing and thinking, so it is called non-different. The meaning of what is called neither different nor not different is as previously stated. Of the two explanations, the latter is better, because it is consistent with the preceding and following words of the sutra. Bodhisattva Maitreya again said to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, what are the images of the objects of insight and samadhi? Are they different from this mind? Or are they not different? From here on, the sixth part is the door to distinguishing calm abiding and insight as mere consciousness, or the door to distinguishing whether the mind and object are the same or different. This is also divided into six aspects: request, answer, examination, explanation, answer, and general statement. This is the first request of the noble Maitreya. There are also three explanations for this request. Some say that here insight is mentioned, and the object of samadhi is asked, as it is said in the Mahayana Samgraha, after explaining the images of the objects of samadhi, insight is not explained, and as it seems like the image of samadhi from below in this very sutra. Some say that here samadhi is mentioned, and the object of insight is asked, as it is said in other sutras, pointing out the faults of the ten yogas of the exhaustion birth place, etc. Therefore, the samadhi mentioned in the Mahayana Samgraha, etc., refers to insight arising from relying on samadhi, so the word samadhi is mentioned.

It is said to be like that. Some say that the images of the objects of samadhi and wisdom are asked simultaneously, because this sutra asks about the objects of vipassana and samadhi. The meaning of this question is: Are the objects of vipassana and samadhi, such as blue, the same as this mind, or are they different? This is the wording of the question. In the Samdhinirmocana Sutra, it also appears that the image of the object of samadhi is the same as this sutra. In the commentary on the Mahāyānasaṃgraha by Master Asanga, it says: Among them, samadhi is the nature of the mind being one-pointed on the object, and it is the nature of mental dharma. It calls the object of focus the object of action, and its own object is called form. What appears similar to it is called an image. If the image is combined with the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, it is said to refer to the images of transformation and maturation, etc. In another different commentary on the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, it says: The first eight of the ten kasinas are form, namely blue, red, white, yellow, earth, water, fire, and wind. All of these eight forms, the Sarvastivadins believe that the four great elements among the eight are included in the sense base of touch, and the four such as blue are included in the sense base of form. Because their doctrine believes that the dharma base only includes non-form unmanifest matter. The Sautrantikas, as stated in the Siddhiviniscaya, believe that unmanifest matter is neither form nor mind. The form of the object of samadhi is included in the dharma base, which is mostly in agreement with the Mahayana doctrines. Therefore, in the Abhidharmakośa, the Sautrantikas say that the three forms mentioned in the sutras refer to
