It should be understood as stated. The phrase "This is called stillness" indicates the name. Some say that this very sutra passage can be divided into two parts. The first part, with phrases such as "other with whatever mind of attention," indicates the method of stillness. The second part, with phrases such as "having entered thus," correctly explains stillness itself. This shows that by means of great wisdom arising from thought, and by means of the two ways of lesser wisdom arising from hearing and thought as objects, the inner mind becomes continuous, thereby showing the absence of an object of focus. Therefore, the correct explanation of the characteristics of stillness, its meaning has been explained earlier. Thus, the phrase "Bodhisattvas seek complete stillness" is the second part, summarizing and answering the previous question. Because of obtaining extreme pliancy of body and mind, abiding in this, therefore, how well-thought-out Dharma, in the inner state of meditative absorption, separately cognize and delight in its image. Abandoning the characteristics of the mind, from here onwards, is the second part, separately revealing the door of insight. This can also be divided into two parts: correctly indicating the door of insight, and summarizing and answering the previous question. The first door also has two explanations. Some say that relying on the state of meditative absorption, the explanation of this sutra passage will become two kinds. Therefore, it is divided into two parts: thoroughly distinguishing non-object of focus, and indicating that insight arises relying on an object of focus, this is the first part. This sutra passage can also be divided into two parts. The first part, with phrases such as "having obtained extreme pliancy of body and mind," indicates the place of insight. Thus, having previously obtained extreme pliancy and abiding in this, therefore insight arises. The second part, with phrases such as "how well thought out," thoroughly distinguishes non-object of focus. Thus, for the Dharma of attention of hearing and thought object of focus previously indicated, in the inner meditative absorption, generating similar image appearances, and then, attending by way of delighting in that image, and

Generating individual discernment arises because of the object of calm abiding and insight, and because of the arising of the characteristics of the mind. The so-called characteristics of the mind are the mind itself being the characteristic, therefore it is called the characteristics of the mind. Thus, with regard to those meanings called the image of samadhi, to accurately distinguish, to thoroughly distinguish, to completely understand, to completely examine, to endure, to desire, to have wisdom, to see, to contemplate, whatever these are, that is called insight, which means the second is showing that insight arises dependent on the object. This sutra passage should also be divided into four parts to explain: First, "Thus, the image of samadhi," and so on, indicates the object to be completely examined, meaning that the image itself of the object of practice of inner samadhi mentioned earlier above, is called the object of complete examination. Second, "to accurately distinguish," and so on, indicates the nature of yoga, these are the four natures of wisdom. These four natures should also be understood as explained in the treatise *Abhidharmasamuccaya*, therefore, it is said in that treatise that the distinction of dharmas is because of how many there are. Thorough distinction is because of how it exists as it is. Complete understanding is the mental activity accompanied by discrimination, which, together with wisdom, establishes the characteristics of dharmas. Complete examination is because it possesses complete seeking. The treatise *Yogācārabhūmi* also mostly agrees with this, therefore, it says in that treatise, what are the four insights? That is to say, a bhikṣu, relying on the inner calm abiding of the mind, distinguishes, thoroughly distinguishes, completely understands, and completely examines the dharmas, whatever these are, are called the four insights. Then how does one distinguish? That is to say, the object of purifying conduct, the object of the wise, and afflictions

The objects of cultivation are distinguished by the differences in their quantity. How are they well distinguished? It is like this: the objects of experience are well distinguished by their existence as they are. How is it completely understood? It is like this: for those objects, with the attention of wisdom, accompanied by discrimination, completely grasping their characteristics, thereby completely understanding. How is it completely observed? It is like this: when the objects of experience are truly understood, then complete observation takes place. It is also said in the scriptures that these four are successively called the four types of Vipassanā. Thirdly, the names of Vipassanā are shown by names such as "Forbearance," which are five types. Among them, forbearance is like this: it is forbearance to comprehend. Desire is like this: it becomes faith. Wisdom is discrimination. Seeing is complete seeking. Cognition is like this: it is individual discrimination. These five are the same in meaning, but different in name. Therefore, in the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra, it is said that wisdom, jñāna, seeing, intelligence, prajñā, cognition, etc., are differences in names, and are the nature of dharma characteristics and mental phenomena that are well distinguished. The scriptures also explain it in this way. "That basis is called Vipassanā," etc., is the conclusion. Some say that this is to explain the sutra based on the firm root and image. Among them, "How to contemplate," etc., well explains the dharma of the root itself. "Inner samādhi," etc., shows that the image arises based on the root. Individual discrimination is performed based on the image. In this way, "of samādhi," etc., shows the power of the image of Vipassanā, that is, the state of comprehension arising from the root. Therefore, in the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra, it is said that the yogi's image.
