Thinking and listening, and the mind that conforms to the two kinds of wisdom born of thought, becomes the object of focus. Some say that the two kinds of wisdom and the conforming mind become the object of focus. In reality, the characteristic of tranquility is that the mind is extremely calm and dwells on one object. Therefore, the mind that focuses on the object is called the object. Vipassana, on the other hand, is because the mind can extremely distinguish the meaning of what is to be known. The aspect of the reason for the complete transformation of the two kinds of wisdom born of hearing and thought is called the object of focus, thus it is shown. Continuously attending to the mind within, is called attention, because it is focused and shows tranquility. Among them, the mind within means that the mind that focuses on the object is gathered and dwells in samadhi, so it is called the mind within. Therefore, in the Yogacarabhumi-sastra, it is said that focusing the mind on the inner object is because it is not distracted outwards. This shows that continuously attending to the mind within, is called attention, which is the mind that conforms to hearing and thought. Because of entering like this and dwelling many times, physical pliancy and mental pliancy arise, which is a state. Like this, tranquility is because it has nine kinds of correct conduct such as dwelling within, so physical pliancy and mental pliancy will arise. Among them, physical pliancy refers to the tactile sensation of extreme pliancy caused by the four great elements. Mental pliancy refers to the category of extreme pliancy among the eleven kinds of virtuous dharmas. In the Asanga's Commentary on the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, it is said that the nature of a body that is light and comfortable in shape and color is the characteristic of pliancy. Like this, in order to establish tranquility in the state of physical and mental pliancy. In the Yogacarabhumi-sastra, it is said that the nine states of mind dwelling in bliss are the aspects of tranquility.

Furthermore, the nine ways of abiding in the mind are from the treatise Abhidharma-samuccaya. It only mentions the names of the nine ways, but there is no detailed explanation. In the Asanga's Abhidharma-samuccaya, the names are mentioned in order and explained in detail. Therefore, according to that treatise, calm abiding is as follows: keeping the mind only within, continuously keeping, keeping with moisture, keeping nearby, taming, pacifying, completely pacifying, single-pointedly pacifying, and keeping equally. These nine ways make the mind abide in ease, so it is called calm abiding. Among them, keeping the mind only within is to first attach the mind closely so that it does not wander outward from external objects. Continuously keeping is because in this way, after initially attaching the gross mind, one can focus on that object in a continuous manner and make it subtle, thereby achieving concentration. Keeping with moisture means that even if the mind wanders outward from the object of focus, it can be brought back. Keeping nearby is to prevent the mind from scattering outward from the beginning, so mindfulness must be kept nearby. Taming means that from the beginning, one generates the perception of faults in the objects of distraction, such as forms, and controls them, and thoroughly tames the mind so that it is not allowed to wander. Pacifying means that by observing the faults of disturbing thoughts, erroneous discriminations, and near afflictions, one tames the mind and does not allow it to wander. Completely pacifying means that even if one forgets and sudden thoughts and so on arise, one does not accept them and does not allow them to occur again. Single-pointedly pacifying means that through the application of diligence, one abides comfortably in the supreme samadhi without interruption or obstruction. Keeping equally means that because one is very familiar, the stream of samadhi arises naturally without conscious effort, without distraction. Thus it is said. Extensive explanations are found in the treatises Yogacarabhumi-sastra and Sutra-alamkara.
