There are three explanations. Some say that both "completely seeking" and "mastering" mean practice, and that "completely seeking" and "mastering" are spoken to distinguish between tranquility and insight. Some say that "completely seeking" and "mastering" belong to both tranquility and insight, therefore, in the Sutra Unraveling of the Profound Thought of the Noble, it is said to be proficient in tranquility and insight. Some say that "completely seeking" means practice, because it strives to practice tranquility, so it is only tranquility, not insight. "Mastering" is mastering insight, because it can understand the meaning well, so it is insight, not tranquility, therefore, the sutra itself says, "One should completely seek tranquility and master insight." The Blessed One said to the Bodhisattva Maitreya: "Son of good family, how do I teach the Bodhisattvas to establish the Dharma in order? It is like the Sutra Pitaka, the Geya, the Vyakarana, the Gatha, the Udana, the Nidana, the Avadana, the Itivrittaka, the Jataka, the Vaipulya, the Adbhuta-dharma, the Upadesha, and so on. The second is the correct answer spoken by the Tathagata. This also has two aspects: the teaching of the scriptures as the place of practice, and the excellent teaching of practicing correctly according to the teaching. This is the first. The Blessed One said to Maitreya: "I teach the Bodhisattvas to establish the Dharma in order, like these twelve parts of the scriptures, that is, what is said from the Sutra Pitaka to the Upadesha." Now, these twelve parts of the scriptures are also widely shown from the teachings. The treatise Abhidharma-samuccaya says that the Sutra Pitaka is like what is said alone in the way of summarizing. The Geya is from the middle and end of the Sutra Pitakas.

Furthermore, it is recited in verses with melodies. Moreover, in order to understand the Sutra Pitaka of straightforward meaning, it should be called reciting with melodies. The section on prophecies refers to where the qualities, faults, and distinctions of the place of rebirth of the noble Shravakas who have passed away are prophesied. Furthermore, the Sutra Pitaka of definitive meaning is called the section on prophecies, because it prophesies and elaborates on the profound intention. The section on verses refers to where, from the various Sutra Pitakas, they are combined in verses, and the two roots, three roots, four roots, five roots, and six roots are spoken. The section on self-utterances refers to where the Tathagata himself speaks out of joy. The section on narratives refers to what is spoken due to the cause of questioning, and also the precepts that are established with accompanying events are also called narratives. The section on illustrations refers to where it is spoken with examples. The section on such occurrences refers to where the previous practices of the noble ones are spoken. The section on birth stories refers to where the conduct of the Bodhisattvas is spoken. The extensive section refers to being in accordance with the Bodhisattva Pitaka. The meaning of the extensive is the same as vast, extremely developed, and incomparable. Why is it called extensive? Because it becomes a place of benefit and happiness for all sentient beings, and because it expounds the Dharma that is broad, vast, and profound. Why is it called extremely developed? Because it extremely develops all obscurations. Why is it called incomparable? Because it has no equal opponent. The section on wondrous Dharma refers to where the wondrous and marvelous Dharma of Shravakas, Bodhisattvas, Tathagatas, and so on is taught. The section on the definitive teaching of the Dharma refers to what was said above, that the characteristics of the Dharma are taught without being inverted, that is, by showing the characteristics of the Dharma that have not been confused.

In the Sutra, these twelve appear individually without being translated into Indian languages. The extensive explanation should be understood as it appears in the teachings on characteristics. Those Bodhisattvas, having listened well, grasped well, mastered recitation, contemplated well with their minds, and thoroughly realized through seeing, etc., as shown in the second chapter, it demonstrates the excellence of truly practicing. This is also divided into two: the correct teaching of the union of calm abiding and insight, and from "with what mind of attention" onwards, the two doors of calm abiding and insight are truly explained. The faculties are also of two kinds: the teaching of the wisdom of hearing and the teaching of the wisdom of thinking. This is the first. The wisdom of hearing also has five characteristics: listening well, grasping well, mastering recitation, contemplating well with the mind, and thoroughly realizing through seeing. Thus, Bodhisattvas listen attentively with one mind to the teachings, grasp them well, master recitation, contemplate them well with their minds, and thoroughly realize them with wisdom. In the treatise *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra*, the wisdom of hearing is taught with four characteristics, namely, all except the first characteristic of hearing mentioned in this sutra. Furthermore, in the *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra*, from the perspective of the ground arising from hearing, it is taught with six characteristics, namely, adding the word "intelligence." The latter five characteristics, although slightly different in name, are the same in meaning as those mentioned in this sutra. Therefore, in that treatise it says: "What is the ground arising from hearing? It is like this: in the five sciences, abandoning the immeasurable differences of names, sentences, and letters, first with intelligence, listening, grasping, memorizing, reciting, recollecting, and knowing without error." Therefore, it should be combined with the five aspects mentioned in this sutra in order. Among them, listening is the same as what is said to be listening well. Grasping and memorizing are what is said to be grasping well.
