It is extensively taught in accordance with the correct reasoning of reality, as well as in the Great Commentary (Mahāvibhāṣā), the Treatise on the Stages of Yoga Practice (Yogācārabhūmi), and the Sutra of the Great Nirvana of the Noble One. Meditating on dependent origination is taught in the Treatise on the Stages of Yoga Practice. Skillful differentiation of elements is extensively taught in the Treatise on the Manifestation of Various Minds (Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra), the Great Commentary (Mahāvibhāṣā), and the Treatise on the Stages of Yoga Practice. Exhaling and inhaling are extensively taught in the Treatise on the Manifestation of Various Minds, the Treatise on the Treasury (Abhidharmakośa), in accordance with the correct reasoning of reality, the Great Commentary (Mahāvibhāṣā), and the Treatise on the Stages of Yoga Practice. Furthermore, in the treatise Compendium of Various Aspects of the Dharma (Abhidharmasamuccaya), the objects of the wise are also these five aspects: being skilled in aggregates, being skilled in elements, being skilled in sources, being skilled in dependent origination, and being skilled in what is and is not possible. What is being skilled in what is and is not possible? It is to be observed from being skilled in dependent origination. What is the difference between being skilled in what is and is not possible and being skilled in dependent origination? Because phenomena manifest from phenomena, without a cause, and because of completely abandoning the cause of unfavorable factors, it is being skilled in dependent origination. Because of completely grasping the manifestation of the result that is in accordance with the cause, it is being skilled in what is and is not possible. It is said in the commentary on this very text that, like this, since actions and so forth arise from phenomena such as ignorance, phenomena are not born without a cause, nor do they arise from unfavorable causes such as Īśvara. The knowledge that understands this is called being skilled in dependent origination. Even though it arises from the cause of mere phenomena, the result that is in accordance with it arises from the cause that is in accordance with it. For example, the maturation of good conduct is desirable, and the maturation of bad conduct is undesirable, and so forth. The knowledge that understands these is called being skilled in what is and is not possible. The extensive explanation of the five skills is in the Treatise on the Stages of Yoga Practice.

It should be understood as taught in the "Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra." Furthermore, the object of focus for the manifestation of afflictions from that very text is as follows: the coarseness of the lower grounds, the peacefulness of the higher grounds, suchness, and the four noble truths. It is stated that in the commentary on this very text, "The coarseness of the lower grounds and the peacefulness of the higher grounds," if explained in conjunction with the worldly path, it is because it suppresses all entanglements. "Suchness and the four noble truths," if explained in conjunction with the supramundane path, suchness is for brevity, and the four noble truths are for elaboration, because it permanently abandons latent tendencies. The extensive explanation should be as taught in the "Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra." The latter three objects of focus are not explained separately here because they are mostly in agreement with the treatises. The four pervasive objects of focus have different distinctions in the teachings, so they are taught here in relation to each other. From this very sutra and others, because they are taught according to the main aspect, the four pervasive objects of focus are taught separately. The names of these four also have common and distinct aspects. The common name is that all four are called pervasive objects of focus. Therefore, in the "Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra," it is said: "These four objects of focus go everywhere and follow all objects of focus, and are taught by the perfectly enlightened Buddhas who have appeared in the past, future, and present, therefore they are called pervasive objects of focus." Furthermore, they are also called pervasive because they pervade the aspect of calm abiding, pervade all things, pervade the nature of suchness, and pervade things related to cause and effect. Among them, what is said as the image with conceptualization is the aspect of insight here. What is said as the image without conceptualization is the aspect of calm abiding here.
