, possessing wisdom but lacking samadhi, possessing both wisdom and samadhi, and lacking both samadhi and wisdom, these should also be discussed here. Bodhisattva Maitreya then asked the Blessed One as follows: "Blessed One, what are the four objects of focus that you have spoken of?" From this point onwards, it is the second, showing the door of explaining the distinctions of the objects of focus for calm abiding and insight. This also has two aspects: the request and the answer. The request is also divided into three: briefly indicating the number, arranging the names according to the number, and accurately making the request itself; this is the first. Among them, the object of focus, the object of focus is the object of experience, because the object itself, that is, all four objects of focus, possesses its own nature, it is called the object of focus. The image associated with conceptual thought, as the object of focus; and the image without conceptual thought, as the object of focus; and the limit of the object, as the object of focus; and the complete accomplishment of necessity, as the object of focus, as it is said, this is the second, arranging the names according to the number. The object of focus, if briefly summarized, there are four types, namely: the pervasive object of focus, the object of focus for purifying conduct, the skillful object of focus, and the object of focus for purifying afflictions. These four types are explained differently in the teachings, that is, in this sutra and in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*, only the names of the four pervasive objects of focus are listed, but no detailed explanation is given. In the treatise *Yogācārabhūmi*, only the names of the four objects of focus, such as the pervasive and the purification of conduct, are listed, but no detailed explanation is given. In the treatises *Abhidharmasamuccaya* and its commentary, and in the *Śrāvakabhūmi* of the *Yogācārabhūmi*, the four objects of focus are extensively explained in order, so they are cited here. Therefore, in the *Abhidharmasamuccaya*,

What are the various distinctions of objects of focus? In short, there are these four types: pervasive objects of focus, objects of focus that purify conduct, objects of focus for the wise, and objects of focus that purify afflictions. Pervasive objects of focus are also of four types, namely: objects of focus of images with conceptualization, objects of focus of images without conceptualization, objects of focus of the limit of things, and objects of focus of accomplished purpose. The object of focus of images with conceptualization is when one focuses on calm abiding and insight through faith and attention. The object of focus of images without conceptualization is whatever is the sphere of activity when one focuses on calm abiding and insight solely through that attention. The object of focus of the limit of things is whatever is the suchness of all phenomena and the suchness as it is. Therein, the suchness of what exists is, for example, the aggregates, elements, and sources. The suchness as it is is, for example, the four noble truths, suchness, and all conditioned things are impermanent, all conditioned things are suffering, all phenomena are without self, nirvana is peace, emptiness, wishlessness, and signlessness. The object of focus of accomplished purpose is the transformation of the basis. Objects of focus that purify conduct are also of five types, namely: those who are much engaged in desire should focus on impure objects; those who are much engaged in hatred should meditate on objects of loving-kindness; those who are much engaged in delusion should focus on objects of dependent origination; those who are engaged in pride should focus on the distinction of elements; those who are engaged in conceptualization should focus on objects of mindfulness of breathing in and breathing out. It is said that the meditation on impurity is extensively shown in the Treasury of Knowledge, the treatises that accord with the Correct Reasoning Treatise, the Great Commentary, and the Grounds of Yogic Practice. The meditation on loving-kindness is in the Treasury of Knowledge and the
