And the door of showing the method of practice, the door of distinguishing whether the two paths of tranquility and insight are the same or different, the door of distinguishing tranquility and insight as merely consciousness, or the door of distinguishing whether mind and object are the same or different, the door of practicing tranquility and insight in union, the door of thoroughly distinguishing tranquility and insight, the door of showing tranquility and insight that rely on or do not rely on the Dharma, the door of thoroughly distinguishing between conceptualization and analysis, etc., the door of thoroughly distinguishing the reasons for tranquility and insight, superior perception, and equanimity, the door of thoroughly distinguishing between Dharma and meaningful wisdom, the door of collecting other samadhis of tranquility and insight, the door of the causes, effects, and functions of tranquility and insight, the door of thoroughly distinguishing the places and antidotes of tranquility and insight, the door of showing that insight obtains enlightenment, the door of thoroughly guiding vast powers and qualities, and the door of showing that feeling will be negated in the realm of no remainder. This is the first door of distinguishing the supports and places of tranquility and insight. This also has two aspects: asking and answering. This is the first request by the Bodhisattva, in which the name "Maitreya" is derived from the Sanskrit word मैत्री (梵文天城体:मैत्री,梵文罗马拟音:maitrī,汉语字面意思:Loving-kindness), which has three meanings. The first is the name taken from the mother, just as his mother is called Loving Mother, because the name was taken from Loving Mother, therefore he is called Maitreya. The second is that his nature is loving-kindness and compassion, so he is called Maitreya. Therefore, in the Noble Avatamsaka Sutra, it is said that initially he was called Maitreya because he obtained the samadhi of loving-kindness. The third is the name taken from aspiration, in the Noble Sutra of the Light of All Wisdom of the Ascetics, it is said that when Maitreya previously became the Light of All Wisdom of the Ascetics, he heard the sutra called "The Samadhi Taught by the Buddha Maitreya," therefore he aspired that when I attain complete enlightenment in the future, I will also...

It is said that he made the aspiration, "May I become Maitreya." Therefore, he is called Maitreya because he possesses these three meanings. Here, the questions asked also have two intentions: the first is to ask what to rely on to cultivate shamatha and vipassana; the second is to ask what dharma to abide in to cultivate shamatha and vipassana. Among them, shamatha and vipassana are dhyana and wisdom. Therefore, in the Abhisamayalankara, from the chapter on explaining shamatha and vipassana, it says that shamatha is dhyana, and vipassana is wisdom. In the commentary on the Holy Buddha-bhumi Sutra, it also says that shamatha refers to dhyana, and vipassana refers to wisdom. Furthermore, in the Holy Prajnaparamita Sutra, it says that shamatha refers to one-pointedness of mind, and vipassana refers to seeing all dharmas as they truly are. In addition, in the commentary on the Mahayana-samgraha by Acharya Asanga, it says that shamatha refers to being the antidote to distracted dhyanas, and vipassana refers to being the antidote to inverted wisdom. The distinctions between these two are mentioned in the Abhisamayalankara, the Awakening of Faith, the Abhidharma-samuccaya, the Vibhanga, the Sutra on Showing the Precepts of a Layman, the Bodhisattva-pitaka Sutra, the Mahasamghata Sutra, and the Mahaparinirvana Sutra, but due to limitations of space, they will not be elaborated on here. The Bhagavan said to the Bodhisattva Maitreya: Noble son, bodhisattvas do not abandon the establishment of dharma designations and the aspiration for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and by making them their support and abode, they cultivate shamatha and vipassana in the Mahayana. Thus, the Tathagata correctly answered that bodhisattvas cultivate shamatha by relying on the establishment of dharma designations in the twelve-part scriptures.
