This is the accurate explanation of the words themselves. Furthermore, this is also a detailed explanation of the chapter's name. In Indian language, it is called "yoga," which translates to "union." Regarding yoga, there are two different explanations in the commentary on the "Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra." Some say that, in general, it refers to the objects, practices, and fruits of the three vehicles, and so on. The "and so on" refers to encompassing all aspects of the teachings to be expressed, thus these are all called yoga, because everything has the meaning of skillful means and accordance. The yoga of objects is like this: for all objects, there is non-reversal, accordance, and thorough understanding. It is said that, in order, it becomes as its own nature, not contradicting reason, according with all phenomena, and by this, one obtains enlightenment and nirvana, and accords with correct reasoning, teachings, accomplishments, and fruits, therefore it is called yoga. Although the yoga of objects pervades everything, the sutras and treatises explain it in various different ways according to characteristics and faculties. Some say that from the four reasons such as dependence, to the aggregates, elements, sources, dependent origination, truths, and so on, are all called yoga, because they possess four kinds of self-nature and accord with four kinds of self-nature. Among them, the yoga of practice is like this: all practices are mutually in accordance, in accordance with correct reasoning, in accordance with correct teachings, and inclined towards correct fruits, therefore it is called yoga. Although this pervades all practices, the sutras and treatises explain it in various different ways according to characteristics and faculties. Some say that correctly practicing various behaviors is yoga. Some say that the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment are yoga.

It is called yoga. Some say that the path of uniting shamatha and vipassana is called yoga. Similarly, some say that the wisdom and great compassion of the Bodhisattva entering into equality is called yoga. The above is said because it possesses four meanings. Among them, the yoga of the result is as follows: because all results are mutually harmonious, because it is in accordance with the true reasoning, because it is in accordance with the true teachings, and because it is in accordance with the true cause, it is called yoga. Although the yoga of the result pervades all results, in the sutras and treatises, it is spoken of in terms of nature and foundation, so there are various differences in the teachings. Some say that the Buddha's unshared qualities, such as the ten powers and four fearlessnesses, are called yoga. Similarly, some say that the qualities of conditioned and unconditioned are called yoga, the above is said because it possesses the above-mentioned meaning. Similarly, the noble teachings are also called yoga, because they are in accordance with the true reasoning, because they are in accordance with the true practice, and because they lead to the true result. Some say that the meditations of the three vehicles are called yoga, because by repeatedly striving and meditating, one can be in accordance with reasoning and in accordance with practice, thereby obtaining a superior result, and because it is the object of the yoga of the realm, result, and noble teachings, and because it is the result of yoga, and because it proclaims yoga, it is called yoga, but it is not true yoga. Although there are two explanations in that commentary, the yoga spoken of in this sutra is combined with the second explanation, which for practitioners is the nature of shamatha and vipassana. As stated in the sutra below, the path of uniting shamatha and vipassana is called yoga. In this chapter

In order to extensively show the meaning of the yoga of quiescence and insight, it is called "Discriminating Yoga." Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya requested the Bhagavan, saying: "Bhagavan, relying on what, abiding in what, does a Bodhisattva cultivate quiescence and insight in the Great Vehicle?" From here onwards, the previous four chapters up to this point show the objects to be fully examined. And here, with two chapters, he shows the practice of examination. This can be divided into two aspects: first, with "Discriminating Yoga," he shows the door to accomplishing quiescence and insight; second, with the grounds and perfections, he excellently shows the ten grounds and ten perfections. Among the two chapters, since quiescence and insight are common, they are shown first; and since the ten grounds and ten perfections are distinct, they are shown later. Alternatively, quiescence and insight are concise, so they are shown first; and the ten grounds and ten perfections are extensive, so they are shown later. Showing quiescence and insight can also be divided into two aspects: correctly explaining quiescence and insight; and from "Then, the Bodhisattva Maitreya" onwards, excellently showing the practice in accordance with the teachings. The first is also divided into two aspects: extensively explaining with prose; and briefly showing with verses. Some say that this one chapter, if briefly summarized, can be divided into three aspects: extensively explaining with prose; briefly showing after mentioning verses; and showing the practice in accordance with the teachings. Prose can also be divided into two aspects: extensively distinguishing quiescence and insight; and from "Then, the Bhagavan said thus" onwards, concluding and encouraging practice. Extensive distinction is also shown through eighteen doors: the door of distinguishing the support and place of quiescence and insight; the door of showing the distinctions of the objects of quiescence and insight; the door of distinguishing the complete search for quiescence and insight; the door of conforming to quiescence and insight.
