Those who have attained power should not be called those with definite power, because they have not yet attained the noble fruit. Those who have attained the three powers, such as those who do not know everything and those who know everything, should be called those with definite power, because they have attained the noble fruit. Those who abide at the peak should not be called those with definite power, because they have not yet separated from the four lower realms. Those who abide in patience should be called those of definite lineage, because they have separated from the four lower realms. Those Shravakas who have not become definite in power and lineage can be transformed from inferior to superior. Those who have attained definite power and lineage cannot be transformed. If there is no meaning in transforming these Shravakas from inferior to superior, why is the One Vehicle taught? Because in conjunction with the teachings of the Mahayana, those who do not single-mindedly cultivate the Bodhisattva path are regarded as those whose power and lineage are not definite. Since all Shravakas have the meaning of transforming from inferior to superior, these individuals who are vessels for the teachings are also led to practice the Mahayana. Furthermore, in the commentary on the Prajnaparamita Sutra, it is mentioned that there are four paths: the path of gods and humans, the path of the three vehicles, and the fourth. The Dharma of the Bodhisattva is to lead sentient beings and firmly establish them on the path of the Mahayana, but those who are not suitable to enter the path of the Mahayana are placed on the lower two vehicles. Those who are not suitable to enter Nirvana are placed in the merit and happiness of gods and humans, and are led to accumulate the causes of Nirvana. Furthermore, in the commentary on the Lotus Sutra, it is mentioned that there are four types of Shravakas: those who are definite, those who are arrogant, those who have turned away from Bodhi, and those who are emanated Shravakas. The Tathagata prophesied about two types of Shravakas: the emanated Shravakas and those who had previously turned away but then generated the mind of Bodhi again. Those who are definite and those who are arrogant

Therefore, the two types of Shravakas, because their faculties are not yet mature, the Tathagata does not prophesy for them, while Bodhisattvas are prophesied for, because they are led to generate Bodhicitta through skillful means. Therefore, in conjunction with this teaching, there is no doubt that there is no such thing as "sentient beings without the potential for Buddhahood," nor is there such a thing as "Shravakas of fixed lineage" or "Pratyekabuddhas who can never attain Buddhahood." In sutras and treatises such as the "Samdhinirmocana Sutra" and the "Yogacarabhumi-sastra," it is said that "they will definitely not attain Buddhahood," which is stated in consideration of the state when the faculties are not yet mature, not because they will definitely not attain Buddhahood. Therefore, the "Ratnagotravibhaga" states: "Those with such great desire also do not pass into Nirvana, nor do they have the potential for Nirvana." What is the meaning of this statement? It is to strongly reveal the cause of slandering the Mahayana, and to consider immeasurable time. Although it is said in this way, because they also have the true nature of purity, it cannot be said that they never have the nature of purity. In the "Yogacarabhumi-sastra," it is said: "In the realm of Nirvana without remainder, all diligent things and all conditioned actions are severed." If, according to what was said earlier, the Shravakas will definitely attain Buddhahood, then how should what is said in the "Yogacarabhumi-sastra" be understood and explained? Answer: In the "Lotus Sutra," it is said: "After my Parinirvana, some disciples, because they have not heard this sutra, do not understand the conduct of Bodhisattvas, and generate the thought of Nirvana from the merits they have heard, and enter Nirvana. I will then become a Buddha in other worlds, and my name will also be different. Although those people generate the thought of Nirvana and enter Nirvana, in those Buddha lands, they will seek the wisdom of the Buddha everywhere." It should be known
