Then the Dharma will remain in the world for six years. After my Nirvana, the Dharma will remain in the world for two thousand years. Although this statement is very certain, the meaning is not certain. The reason for the uncertainty is that the Blessed One considered that other Buddhas did not devote themselves to teaching the Dharma, so he said they were lazy. Those Buddhas only correctly pointed out one fault for one Dharma. But the Blessed One Shakyamuni Buddha pointed out countless faults for all kinds of Dharma, and repeatedly declared them, so it is said that he practiced diligently. It is said that, as explained extensively in that, from the explanation of the scriptures, the non-definitive teachings are like this: such as the Sutra Pitaka, the Recitation Pitaka, the Prophecy Pitaka, etc., the Blessed One only briefly stated the meaning, and extensively distinguished it, so it needs to be distinguished and explained again. The definitive teachings are like this: it should be understood in the opposite way to the former. The hidden teachings are like this: mostly the teachings of the Hearer Vehicle's Vinaya Pitaka. The completely distinguished teachings are like this: mostly the teachings of the Mahayana's Vinaya Pitaka. It is said that the Yogacarabhumi-sastra also says so. In the commentary on the Holy Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, it says: Among them, the so-called Sutra of Definitive Meaning means that among all sentient beings, the Buddha is the most supreme. Among all scriptures and texts, the Buddha's Dharma is the most supreme. Among all assemblies, the Sangha is the most supreme. Giving alms can turn into great enjoyment. Keeping the precepts can be reborn in the heavens, etc., whatever is declared, that is the Sutra of Definitive Meaning. If it is said that the senior monk preaches the Dharma in a high voice, the Dharma teacher has five benefits: abundant enjoyment, loved by many, beautiful appearance, possessing voice and fame, and will attain Nirvana in the future. Whatever is declared, that is not of definitive meaning. Why is it not of definitive meaning? Because giving alms can obtain enjoyment

Although saying "it will turn into a crow" is a definite meaning, because there is no mixed offering of wealth in teaching the Dharma, saying "one will obtain enjoyment" refers to obtaining enjoyment also through the various ways in which the person teaching the Dharma praises generosity, thereby liberating others' minds of stinginess, and also thoroughly eliminating one's own stinginess. Because of these causes and conditions, one will obtain enjoyment, therefore it is called non-definitive. In the Great Vehicle Bodhisattva Pitaka Sutra, the meaning of definitive and non-definitive is shown through nine ways of mutual dependence. First, whatever is extensive in words and phrases is called a provisional sutra. Whatever is extensive in meaning is called a definitive sutra. Second, whatever fully shows the path is called provisional meaning. Whatever shows the result is called definitive meaning. Third, whatever shows the conventional truth is called provisional meaning. Whatever shows the ultimate truth is called definitive meaning. Fourth, whatever shows the afflictions of karma and disturbing emotions is called provisional meaning. Whatever shows the exhaustion of karma and disturbing emotions is called definitive meaning. Fifth, whatever condemns the Dharma of afflictions is called provisional meaning. Whatever shows the practice of pure Dharma is called definitive meaning. Sixth, whatever shows complete weariness and turning away from samsara, and delighting in nirvana, is called provisional meaning. Whatever shows that samsara and nirvana are non-dual and without difference is called definitive meaning. Seventh, whatever shows the differences of various words and phrases is called provisional meaning. Whatever shows what is extremely profound, difficult to see, and difficult to understand is called definitive meaning. Eighth, whatever extensively explains words and phrases and makes the mind happy is called provisional meaning. Those that show words and phrases and the mind like ashes

is called निश्चितार्थ (Sanskrit Romanization: niścitārtha, literal Chinese meaning: decided meaning). The ninth is to show that there are self and sentient beings, etc., and to establish that there are various kinds of feeling aggregates, and to show that there is no one who can control sentient beings, those are नैयार्थ (Sanskrit Romanization: naiyārtha, literal Chinese meaning: can be guided meaning). Showing emptiness and signlessness, etc., showing non-self, etc., and the three liberations, those are निश्चितार्थ (Sanskrit Romanization: niścitārtha, literal Chinese meaning: decided meaning), it is said. In the Mahāsaṃnipāta Sūtra, it is also shown by seven kinds of mutual dependence, in which the second and third do not appear, and most of the other terms are the same. The difference is that, in the Mahāsaṃnipāta Sūtra, it is said: The non-definitive meaning sūtra is to distinguish the path to be followed. The definitive meaning sūtra is non-conceptual about the result. This is the mutual dependence of cause and effect shown in the Bodhisattva Piṭaka Sūtra. The so-called non-conceptual is wrongly translated by the translators. In addition, the Mahāsaṃnipāta Sūtra says that the non-definitive meaning sūtra mostly shows the nature of good and evil to sentient beings, so that those who hear the Dharma generate joy and compassion in their hearts. The definitive meaning sūtra is that no matter how it is preached, the listeners will not be confused, and thus obtain the subjugation of their minds. This is the eighth kind of extensive and concise mutual dependence shown in the Bodhisattva Piṭaka Sūtra, although the words are different, the meaning is not different. The Bodhisattva Piṭaka Sūtra says that like ashes, it refers to the sūtra of taming. In the Holy Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, the Śrāvakayāna and the unsurpassed Mahāyāna, etc., are mutually dependent, and the definitive and non-definitive are shown in seven ways, and it should be understood as it is extensively said therein. In this sūtra, the teachings of definitive and non-definitive are also explained as definitive and non-definitive in a hidden and clear way. It should be distinguished as shown above. Thus, in the teachings, the definitive and non-definitive
