If someone asks, how should we understand the statement in the "Compendium of Grounds Sutra" that even a Bodhisattva on the lineage ground will fall into hell? The answer is that there are two explanations for this. The first is that Nagarjuna said that abiding in the lineage will not completely degenerate. Therefore, in the "Ratnagotravibhāga," it says: Some people asked Nagarjuna, what is the meaning of the statement in the "Compendium of Grounds Sutra" that a Bodhisattva on the lineage ground will fall into the Avīci hell? Nagarjuna replied: Although there is a sutra that says this, I could not possibly say such a thing. Why? Because the "Increasing Immaculate Sutra" states that a Bodhisattva on the lineage ground will never fall into hell. This is in accordance with the "Avataṃsaka Sutra." The statement in the "Compendium of Grounds Sutra" and other sutras that they will fall is said to cause fear in the Bodhisattvas who are in front of the ground and to quickly attain the first ground, but it is not said that they will truly fall into the Avīci hell. Aśvaghoṣa also explained it in the same way when composing the "Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana." Therefore, it is said in that treatise that the statement in the sutras that they will completely degenerate and fall into the lower realms is not a true fall, but is to cause fear in the lazy beginners who have not yet entered the right position, and to encourage them to strive diligently. The second is explained by the treatises of the noble Maitreya. There are also two explanations for this. The first is the same as the view of Nagarjuna. The second is based on the sutra proclaimed in the Bodhisattva-bhūmi, which says that the ten abodes and above are called the lineage ground. The first six of the ten abodes are said to be degenerate, and the seventh is said to be non-degenerate. Therefore, it should be understood that abiding in the lineage also has the meaning of being able to degenerate.

Furthermore, in the *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra*, it is said that a Bodhisattva abiding in the stage of faith practice becomes lazy in the meditation of Bodhisattvas, does not make it continuous, does not make it definite, and will completely fall away from what has been attained. Moreover, it is said in the same text that a Bodhisattva who practices with faith will not give up even after generating the great Bodhicitta for a specific purpose. The *Sādhusīla-nirdeśa-sūtra* and the *Vasudhāraṇī-sūtra* also have similar occurrences. Furthermore, in the *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra*, it is said that a Bodhisattva who abides in the stage of faith practice will go alone to the lower realms. The *Sādhusīla-nirdeśa-sūtra* and the *Vasudhāraṇī-sūtra* also say the same. The *Adhimukti-carya-sūtra* and the *Mahāyānasaṃgraha* state that one will not fall away, but this is taught by taking into account the majority of cases, and it is not the ultimate meaning. Furthermore, if beings hear from others what is not Dharma as Dharma and what is not meaning as meaning, and follow their views, then they will perceive Dharma as Dharma and perceive what is not meaning as meaning, and thus become attached to Dharma as Dharma and to what is not meaning as meaning. From this point onwards is the second part, which is the differentiation of what the disciple examines. This is also shown in two ways: first, explaining by distinguishing the two examinations; and second, from the phrase "with that as the basis" onwards, concluding the presentation of the two examinations. The first part is also divided into two from the very existence of the two examinations: first, showing how one becomes attached to the sound just as it is heard; and second, showing the person who does not follow their views and does not readily believe. The first part is also twofold: first, showing how one becomes attached to the sound; and second, showing the faults of attachment. This is the first case: for example, that being hears the teachings from the third teacher, and that teacher sees Dharma as Dharma and what is not meaning as meaning, therefore he and emptiness are different.

also became without views. There are also differences among them. The third teacher heard the Buddha's teachings. The fourth person heard it through others, so the views are consistent with the teacher. If combined with the Abhidharma, then as before, it should be distinguished that the third teacher is explained as a Bodhisattva. If combined with the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra, the third teacher is shown to be a person with wrong views, therefore it says in the sutra: 'Furthermore, some sentient beings hear the Dharma from those with wrong views and gain knowledge.' Therefore, it should be known that like these people, virtuous Dharma is completely lost.' This is the second showing the fault of attachment, similar to the third shown earlier, it should be known that it is lost from immeasurable virtuous Dharma, this is the summary. If some sentient beings do not follow his views, but hear from them that all dharmas are without self-nature, unborn, unceasing, originally peaceful, and naturally completely in nirvāṇa, they will be afraid and panic, etc., this refers to not following the views of the second, but relying on an unbelieving person. This also has two aspects: one is showing that after hearing the teachings, they do not believe, and the other is showing the fault of disbelief starting from 'therefore.' The first is further divided into three: one is showing that hearing the teachings causes fear and panic, the second is showing that fear arises due to inverted knowledge, and the third is showing that due to knowledge, there is slander, this is the first. Thus, that sentient being heard his teachings from the third teacher, but does not follow the views of the previous teacher, therefore it is shown that all dharmas must be without self-nature, etc. After that, when hearing the words 'all dharmas are without self-nature, etc.,' fear arises in the mind, because it is shown 'how all dharmas are without self-nature, etc.,' therefore they feel fear and panic.
