Therefore, it cannot be said to 'exist' because it is thoroughly distinguished by the two emptinesses; nor can it be said to 'not exist.' Similarly, in conventional truth, it cannot be said to 'exist' because it is the nature of conventional imputation; nor can it be said to 'not exist' because it is the nature of other-powered. Furthermore, in ultimate truth, since there is no certainty of existence or non-existence, even if there are no persons or phenomena, it is not existent; even if the two types of emptiness exist, it is not existent. Similarly, in conventional truth, it cannot be determined as non-existent because it is the nature of conventional imputation; nor can it be determined as existent because it is the nature of other-powered. Furthermore, in the treatise *Yogācārabhūmi*, it says: How is emptiness wrongly grasped? If any renunciate or Brahmin does not accept that which is empty, nor that by which it is empty, this is called wrongly grasping emptiness. Why is that? Because that by which it is empty is non-existent, and that which is empty is truly existent. Therefore, it is said to be empty for that reason. If everything were non-existent, then where would anything be? What would become empty? Therefore, it cannot become emptiness itself. Therefore, such a person has wrongly grasped emptiness. Furthermore, in the *Yogācārabhūmi*, it says: Having wrongly grasped emptiness in the Great Vehicle, they say this: 'In the conventional, everything exists; in the ultimate, all phenomena do not exist.' To them, one should say this: 'O Venerable One, what is the conventional? What is the ultimate?' If, when asked in this way, they say this: 'That which is the non-nature of all phenomena is the ultimate; that which apprehends as nature those phenomena that are without nature is the conventional.' Why is that? For example, it is not existent, but it is the cause of conventional action, imputation, expression, and naming. If they answer in this way, then one should say to them: 'Is the apprehension of nature the same as expression and...

Do you think it arises from the cause of conventional truth? Or do you think it is merely a designation and conventional truth? If it arises from the cause of designation and conventional truth, then it cannot be said that because it arises from the cause of designation and conventional truth, it is non-existent. If it is merely a designation and conventional truth, then it cannot be said to be merely a designation and conventional truth without a basis. To that, it should also be said: Why, O fortunate one, is that which is perceived non-existent? When asked in this way, if the answer is: Because it is a reversed object. Then it should be said: Do you think that reversal exists? Or do you think it does not exist? If you think it exists, then it cannot be said that the very absence of inherent existence of all phenomena is the ultimate truth. If you think it does not exist, then it cannot be said that because it is a reversed object, that which is perceived is without inherent existence. Thus it is said. In the treatise on the Buddha-nature, it is also taught in this way. Furthermore, in the treatise on the Buddha-nature, it says: Furthermore, those who are proud of their manifestations hold emptiness as a view, saying, "This is the true emptiness, the gate of liberation." They cling to emptiness itself as the gate of liberation of emptiness, and say that all existence and non-existence are empty. Because of clinging to emptiness, it becomes non-existence, and because it becomes non-existence, the reasoning of cause and effect and the two truths is also impaired. Because of the fault of clinging to emptiness, one falls into wrong views. Therefore, such clinging arises from emptiness, and thus it is an attachment to emptiness, not a wrong attachment. All wrong conceptions should be removed by the power of emptiness. Because this clinging arises from emptiness, it is said to be an incurable person. Thus it is said. Therefore, the Bhagavan spoke to Kashyapa:

Abandonment: I allow those who hold the view of self as Mount Sumeru. Why is that? Because it can be refuted. If someone with manifest pride clings to emptiness, even if it is as subtle as one-fourth of a single hair, I will immediately condemn them and allow demons to devour them. Furthermore, in the very extensive treatise, the "Hundred Treatises," it says: What is the true meaning of all phenomena? It is like this: what is the emptiness and selflessness of all phenomena. If that is the case, then there is also fault in this reasoning. Why is that? Just as some people, after hearing about emptiness and selflessness, say that phenomena do not exist, thereby slandering all the true reasoning of cause and effect, and severing all roots of virtue. Are those who have their own faulty views not the fault of emptiness and selflessness? Because of having a wrong view of emptiness, generating a non-true wrong view from self, thereby engaging in wrong conduct, for these people, the meaning of emptiness and selflessness cannot be measured by mind and words. Because it is not something that can be obtained by self, ordinary people hear that phenomena are empty, but do not understand the intention of the noble ones, thereby slandering the cause and effect that exists only on the conventional level, and destroying virtuous dharmas. Is this the fault of emptiness and selflessness? What is the intention of the noble ones in teaching emptiness? It is in order to completely abandon clinging to non-true conceptualizations as real. If that is the case, then phenomena will also become the object of being taught, because in order to completely abandon clinging to phenomena as emptiness in a non-true way. In truth, for those who cling to phenomena as emptiness, the Tathagata also taught that phenomena exist. If existence is taught in order to seek clinging, and emptiness is also taught, then is the true meaning of phenomena emptiness? Or is it existence? The true meaning of phenomena is neither existence nor emptiness, because it cannot be obtained by the proliferation of conceptualizations.
