And how is it? Just as after taking a purgative, all kinds of diseases are stirred up, and if they cannot be purged, they turn into a great disease again. Similarly, the Dharma speaks of emptiness in order to abandon all kinds of wrong views. If one then clings to emptiness, it is incurable. Therefore, abandoning emptiness is without fault. Clinging to emptiness is like the Khenpos of the Yogacharas, who, after distinguishing and establishing the meaning of emptiness, cling to that as the only meaning, which is called a wrong grasp of emptiness. Therefore, in the Treatise "Lamp of Wisdom," it says: Others who speak of seventeen grounds say this: Just as upon investigation, because of the absence of self, the nature of what is investigated is empty. This emptiness of all dharmas is truly existent. If asked, how is it truly existent? They answer: Because there is no clinging to a maker. The author of the treatise says: Your seeing it in that way is called clinging to the view of emptiness. The debater says: How do we cling to emptiness? The author of the treatise says: Like this, because all dharmas are without self-nature, emptiness is not a truly existent dharma, so one should not cling to it. As it is extensively taught in that very scripture. The second is that Acharya Dharmapala and others, relying on the treatises of the noble Maitreya, also teach emptiness and existence in this way: Among them, a correct understanding of emptiness is like this: The nature of the dependent is non-existent, but the selflessness on it is existent. In this way, both existence and non-existence are empty. A wrong grasp of emptiness is like this: If it is said that the nature of the dependent is non-existent, but the nature of the dependent and the perfectly established are existent, they do not believe it, and they cling to the view that all dharmas are utterly non-existent, which is called a wrong grasp of emptiness. Therefore, in the second chapter of the Sutra "Teaching the Excellent Moral Conduct," it says: Two kinds of people are far from the Buddhadharma.

An outsider is not a disciple of the Buddha, and has also completely lost the Buddha's teachings, because they say that there is a true essence from form to nirvana, and they do not believe in the nature of the world's phenomena. Such a person is not suitable to properly receive the precepts of a Bodhisattva, and if they are given, they will not obtain the precepts, and the teacher will also be at fault. Why will they not obtain them? Because they slander the correct teachings and are attached to non-dharmic teachings. The precepts of a Bodhisattva are not easily obtained; they can only be obtained when the mind, speech, and body are all assembled. If some say that the Mahayana sutras say that all dharmas are empty, then they will incur great faults. If they do not understand the meaning of the Mahayana sutras, but with an arrogant mind think that they understand well, and widely proclaim to others with incorrect understanding, then they will also incur great faults. If someone also says that the essence of all dharmas does not exist, how can the world's phenomena exist? Then they will also incur great faults. Why is that? Because one who slanders all dharmas is a true disciple of the heretics and hedonists, just as the hedonists say that the essence of all dharmas does not exist. The Buddha's teachings also teach that existence and non-existence are both non-existent. If someone says that all dharmas are empty, then know that such a person should not live together, speak together, or perform posadha and recite the Pratimoksha Sutra together. If they live together, even up to reciting the Pratimoksha Sutra together, they will incur great faults. Why is that? Because they do not understand the meaning of emptiness. Furthermore, in the same sutra it says: How can one correctly understand emptiness? It is like this, to discriminate from form to nirvana.

It is only that. The so-called non-existence of the nature of various characteristics is the emptiness of form. Whatever is the suchness of form, the establishment of the world, that is not emptiness, for that reason, the dharma of form is only one, it exists and it does not exist, thus it is shown. Because of knowing those two, it exists and it is empty, and not generating manifest clinging with conceptualization on that itself is called knowing the meaning of emptiness correctly. It is said like that. It is extensively shown from that itself. Furthermore, in the treatise *Yogācārabhūmi*, how is emptiness well grasped? Because for what, on what, what does not exist, that is certainly emptiness, truly seen. And whatever remains on this, that truly exists here, thus truly and thoroughly knowing, that is truly entering emptiness, without inversion. It is said like that. In each treatise, it is also said in accordance with this. Furthermore, in the treatise *Abhidharmasamuccaya*, the characteristic of emptiness is like this: for what, what does not exist, that is certainly emptiness, truly seen accordingly. And whatever remains on this, that exists like this. This is entering emptiness as it truly is, without inversion. It is said like that. Furthermore, in the treatise *Vibhaṅga*, the own characteristic of emptiness is neither determined to exist nor determined to not exist. Among them, not being determined to exist is like this: for conditioned things, the nature of sentient beings and the nature of self-nature, it is because it never exists. Not being determined to exist is like this: because the selflessness of sentient beings and the suchness of dharma exist here, it is said like that. Furthermore, in the treatise *Buddhadhātu-nirdeśa*, the two truths cannot be said to exist, nor can they be said to not exist, because they are neither existent nor non-existent. In the ultimate truth, it cannot be said to exist, nor can it be said to not exist, because persons and dharmas do not exist.
